“The Bottom” gets Duane Howard to the top

After passing pole sitter Troy Ale for the lead coming out of turn 2 on lap 7, Duane Howard made domination look easy. He started 14th on the grid but snatched 2nd place by lap 6 and then never looked back. There was little doubt that Howard would find the finish line first while the rest of the top five ran three wide off and on for several laps.

Behind Howard was Doug Hoffman, “Jammin” Jamie Mills, Kevin Hirthler, and Kyle Strickler making second place anyone’s guess. The feature would end with Mills tearing through the field to take over third within the closing laps. His post-race comments gave the fans a taste of how it felt to be able to move all over the track.“This is one heck of a racetrack, no one can go home and complain. This is what racing is supposed to be like”.

Feature winner Howard recorded his 17th career victory as he made the most out of the bottom groove. “The bottom was the way to be…. track position was key at the end of the race.” Duane Howard is the first repeat winner in the first 5 weeks of the 2004 series.

Chip Brown finishes where he started

Chip Brown started on the pole Saturday night as the Jasper Sprint cars took to the field. Once the green flag dropped, Brown began his run up front and never lost his position.

Recent feature winner and series reigning champ Steve Schmidt fell out of contention early as he spun on lap 9 while Mike Piersig, Jon Brennfleck and Jeff Mueller fought for second place. Mark Bitner would join the front pack as the race winded down. Brennfleck made a gutsy charge passing Piersig on the last lap for second with Bitner and Mueller in tow. Chip Brown tied Steve Strubble for all time Jasper Limited Sprint Feature victories, claiming his 6th career trophy. The Jasper Sprint series will be back May 15th with a week off May 22nd.
