MILLS GETS SECOND MODIFIED WIN OF SEASON; 1ST CAREER SPORTSMAN WIN FOR KLINGMEYER

Bridgeport, NJ - Milford, DE’s Jamie Mills added to his point lead in the Coca-Cola Modified division at Bridgeport Speedway, winning the twenty-five lap main event on Saturday night. It was the second win of the season for the 1995 Modified Champion, driving the Blue Hen Racing #30. In the Bridgeport Sportsman feature, former rookie champ Bill Klingmeyer won his career first victory, taking the twenty lap main event for the division. Jeff Mueller made in two in a row in the Bridgeport Winged Sprint class, winning the twenty lap A-Main in his #3J. The fifteen lap Late Model Stock feature was won by Wayne Pfeil, giving the driver his first win at the 5/8th mile speedway.

Quakertown, PA’s Ron Johnson brought the Coca-Cola Modifieds to the start of the twenty-five lap feature event, with his #32 pacing the field from the pole position. Johnson, in his second season of competition at Bridgeport Speedway, held on to the front spot for the first two circuits, until Mills, in the I. G. Burton sponsored #30, blasted by on lap three from his tenth starting spot. Two time modified champion Doug Hoffman, in his own #60 OVER big block mount, took the lead from Mills one lap later after a restart for a caution period. After the caution flag was again displayed on the next lap for Jimmy Chester’s #44, Mills made a daring move on Hoffman, charging to the low side of the track to regain the lead in turns one and two. While Mills began to build a lead over the rest of the field, all eyes were on the charging modifieds of Steve Bottcher and Wade Hendrickson, who were battling each other while they chase down the leaders. Bottcher shot by Hoffman on lap twelve, while Hendrickson took two more laps to make his pass of the 1999 champion for third place. Bottcher was able to trim Mills’ lead, but was never really able to get close enough to challenge the leader. Mills went on to collect the $2500 first place money, while Bottcher and Hendrickson held on to second and third positions. Hoffman, after starting the race in eighth place, came home in fourth, with Oakford, PA’s Dave Adams having his best finish of the season in the Hooters #37 completing the top five. Thirty-five modifieds competed in the night’s events, with heat wins going to Adams, Mills, and six-time champion Roger Laureno. Rick Laubach, in the Keith Rouse #93, won the consolation race.

The twenty lap Bridgeport Sportsman feature was led by just two drivers, with Bear, DE’s Kevin Collins controlling the early portion of the event, charging from the outside pole position. Collins held on to the lead for the first seven laps, while another Delaware driver, Wilmington’s Bill Klingmeyer, was getting to the front of the pack. A caution flag for a five car accident in turn two tightened up the field, and on the restart Klingmeyer was able to work his way by Collins for the lead on lap eight. The yellow flag was brought out three more times before lap fifteen, but each time Klingmeyer was able to hold on to his lead. At the finish, it was Klingmeyer and Collins coming home one–two, while Klingmeyer’s teammate, Ron Roberts, in his #Z14, raced from his tenth starting spot, to finish third. Bridgeport Sportsman point leader Richie Pratt came home in fourth place, with Rob Ratoskey finishing in fifth. GR Smith, Kevin Collins, and Klingmeyer won qualifying heats for the forty-four sportsman. Two consolation races were run, and were won by 2000 champ Mark Forte and BJ DiMascio.

The Bridgeport Winged Sprints A-main started with Mike Piersig, in the Stockburger Chevrolet #24, took the lead from the pole position, until Jeff Mueller could complete his blast to the front from his twelfth starting spot. Mueller was in the top five at the end of one lap, and was sitting in third place just one lap later. Mueller took over the runner up spot after Chip Brown, who was in second, crashed hard into the turn two guardrail on lap three. Mueller charged past Piersig in turns one and two after the restart, and proceeded to pull away from the field. With Mueller building on his lead, Piersig had his hands full with Bob “The Lone Ranger” Adams, who was trying every move he could make to take way second place from Piersig. For twelve laps, Piersig was able to take everything Adams had, but with two to go, Adams finally was work his way by, taking over second place in turn two. At the finish, Mueller had his second win a row, with Adams and Piersig finishing in second and third. Brian Powell and Wayne Mauro completed the top five. Mauro and Piersig won the qualifying heat races for New Jersey’s newest racing division.

Wayne Pfeil started on the outside pole in the fifteen lap Late Model Stock feature, and went the distance for his first win at Bridgeport Speedway. Pfeil and his #72 spent the first ten laps holding off the challenges of Bud Hayes, who won the last Late Model Stock feature at the track in his #32. Hayes had to retire from the event after bringing out the yellow with five to go, and Pfeil went the rest of the way holding off 2001 two-time feature winner Phil Retter to get the win. Behind Retter, Dave Williams came home in third, with Ron Dirkes and Ken Moren filling out the top five.
