TOM MAYBERRY AND BILL HENNING WIN NASCAR FEATURES AT
GRANDVIEW
BECHTELSVILLE, PA JUNE 3, 2001 . . . For the third time this
season, former track champion Tom Mayberry drove the Mike
Kelly owned A&T Chevrolet entry to victory in the 30-lap
Black Horse Auto Body NASCAR Modified feature race. The win,
almost a "photo finish" over Brian Kressley, earned the 25
year veteran of stock and sprint car racing $2,200 for his
efforts.
In the 20-lapper for NASCAR Late Models Bill Henning of
Lansdale, PA was able to win his first feature since
switching to Dodge power. Henning had just a narrow margin of
victory over Ed Trimbur who had chased Henning for the second
half of the feature race.
At the drop of the green Todd Heydt grabbed the top spot
and set the pace for nine laps with Brian Kressley coming
from seventh starting spot to take the lead. Once in front
Kressley, who had been away from the sport for a couple of
seasons, held off challenges from Mike Gular, Ray Swinehart
and Tom Mayberry for many laps.
With just five laps remaining in the 30-lap feature,
Mayberry coming from 15th starting spot, turned the race into
a two car battle between himself and Kressley. On the final
turn of the final lap, the two bumped (nothing serious), and
Mayberry got the edge, just enough, to win the event by a
vary narrow margin in what some thought was close to a photo
finish.
Second spot went to Brian Kressley (New Tripoli), his
best effort of the season, followed by Chip Slocum (Ewing
Township, NJ) coming from 22nd starting spot. Meme DeSantis
(Reading), who had went to the rear of the field at the 10
lap mark, came back to finish fourth and Ray Swinehart
(Bechtelsville) was fifth.
Craig VonDohren finished 11th in the feature and gave up
his number one spot in the point chase to Meme DeSantis in
the battle for the NASCAR Modified championship.
Though it looked easy, it was not, as Bill Henning lead
all 20 laps of the NASCAR Late Model feature. Ed Trimbur,
coming from 8th starting spot, moved in to challenge Henning
on the eighth lap. Henning, in the Harry Henning owned
Henning's Supermarket DODGE, held off strong challenges from
Trimbur throughout the balance of the feature race to grab
his first win of the season. Trimbur, a former drag racer
from Eagleville, PA, finished second followed by rookie Jason
Miller (New Tripoli), Doug Walton (Royersford) and Lou Egrie
(Philadelphia). Point leader going into the night's events,
Dean Stoudt was involved in an early race accident putting
him out and giving the point lead to former champion Lou
Egrie.
With 62 NASCAR Modifieds in the competition area five
qualifying heats were run with wins going to Jeff Strunk, Ray
Swinehart, Jon Kellner, Craig VonDohren and Randy Stoudt.
Consolation wins went to Rick Schaffer, Chip Slocum and Randy
Bailey.
In the late models the qualifying heats went to Bill
Henning, Lou Egrie and John Durling.
Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash, worth $340, went
to Craig VonDohren in the Mrs. T's Pierogies sponsored
modified.
