HIGBIE WINS AGAIN AT ACCORD
By Bill Utter
ACCORD, N.Y. – 7/29/13
Jerry Higbie drove an impressive race to win his second 30 lap Modified feature of the season on Friday night at the Accord Speedway.
After a sub par start to the season Higbie has come on strong behind the wheel of the Gary Mann owned, N.Y. Truck Parts No. 55. He came from ninth starting spot to take command on lap 14 and drove away comfortably to record the win.
Mel Schrufer grabbed the lead on lap one from his outside pole position. The caution came out on lap three after a spin by Donnie Elliott. On the restart a multi car tangle in turn two brought the yellow back out. With five laps in the books David Bush got turned around, bringing out the yellow. On the restart three cars came together in turn two and the caution flew.
Higbie was on the move and when the racing resumed he pulled into second place and closed in on Schrufer. Meanwhile Danny Tyler and Danny Creeden were battling it out for third place.
With fourteen laps complete Ken Boniface spun, bringing out the yellow. When racing resumed Higbie made a power move out of turn four to take the lead. Andy Bachetti made his presence felt as he moved into fifth. Bachetti was in a borrowed ride driving the Creeden back up car after he suffered motor failure in warm ups.
On lap 17 Creeden and Bachetti moved by Tyler to take over third and fourth with Tyler now fifth. Point leader Jackie Brown was marching forward and on lap 24 he took over fifth.
Higbie had built a comfortable lead and he drove uncontested to the victory. Schrufer with a strong run finished second, with Creeden, Bachetti and Brown completing the top five.
Jerry was pleased with the car’s performance but felt Schrufer ran him a bit too hard. “He drove me up to the wall twice. He better hope he is not trying to pass me in a future race,” said Higbie. “This car was fast tonight and I had a lot of fun out there.”
Kevin Duryea returned after an absence and came from 12th starting spot to finish sixth. Mike Ricci, Danny Tyler, Elliott and Scott Ferrier rounded out the top ten.
Anthony Perrego won the 25 lap Sportsman feature for his fourth win of the season. He is on top of the points race as he appears headed to the championship. He finished ahead of Tommy Johnson, Brad Szulewski, Ken Ferrier and Jessie Marks.
Mike Sabia won the holdover Spec Sportsman feature from June 28th for his third win of the season. Tyler Boniface was second, followed by Ed Dachenhausen, Joe Judge and Nick Plumstead.
Mike Dubois was declared the winner of the regular scheduled Spec Sportsman feature after Dachenhausen came up light. Tyler Boniface, Greg McCloskey, Joe Judge and Mike Traver rounded out the top five.
The Pro Stock 20 lap feature was won by John Roese who holds on to a slim point lead over Ralph Ronk.
Nick Johnson won the 15 lap Pro Stock feature for his fourth victory of the season.
It was Joe Szczapa in for the win in the 15 lap Lightning Sprint feature.
