Gill and VanWinden double dip at the BOS

BROCKVILLE-Lee Gill and Kees VanWinden celebrated Fan Appreciation Night in style on Friday at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Both drivers recorded a pair of victories in the Modified and Novice features respectively before a packed house at the fast quarter mile clay oval. Second features were added in the Mods, Sportsman and Novice to make up for a program rained out midway through on June 21st.

Paul Pekkonen led the early part of the first feature engaging in a torrid battle with rookie Mike Adderly. Gill slowly worked his way through the field and set his fastest lap of the race with nine laps remaining to take the top spot. He was never challenged in recording win number 4 of 2002. Chris Jones was second when the checkered flag dropped followed by Mark Hitchcock, Pekkonen and Chris Herbison.

In the second 30 lapper for the Modifieds Gill actually spun off the track in the early going was part of a three car incident in turn 3. However, the two time defending track champ had plenty of time to get to the front and did just that taking the lead around the midway point and then surviving a final lap caution to complete the double dip. Hitchcock was second with Herbison, Doug Fuller and Scott Parliament rounding out the fast five.

VanWinden had a little tougher time with his twin bill. He was leading with three laps remaining in the opener when a lapped car spun right in front of him. The Mooretown driver however cooly drove by Shawn Hodge, exchanging a little paint on the way by with a lap remaining to claim the first Novice feature. In the second he was forced to hold off a furious challenge on the final circuit from Peter Raabe after a rapid rise through the field of 25 starters.

John Mulder almost had two wins in the Sportsman ranks as well. The Spencerville rookie won his first ever Sportsman main in the opener and led the first 14 laps in the second when the caution flag flew quickly ending a half lap lead he had put together. Pernie Banks quickly dove under on the restart and scored his first win of 2002. Mulder himself had fortune smile on him in the first feature as Kyle Dingwall had a win in the bag until his car quit altogether on the backstraightaway with a couple of laps remaining.

A wild finish in the Rookie stock feature saw teenage Rookie Brad Kirkland claim his first win ever. Kirkland watched as Danielle Legault and Roch Aubin, running first and second at the time came together with a lap to go. He took over the lead and ran a solid final tour around the quarter mile for the win. Legault ended up second in front of Aubin.

The Speedway returns to action on Sunday with the Kanes Towing Enduro 200 at 2pm. The next regular event is a full race program in all 4 divisions plus Big Rig time trials next Friday night at 7:30.
