Austin, VanWinden and Gaudet make it two in a row at Brockville

BROCKVILLE-North Augusta’s Randy Gaudet, Kees Van Winden of Moorewood and Dave Austin of Hardington became the first back to back winners of the seaosn on Friday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Gaudet captured his second 20 lap Sportsman feature of the year while Austin took top honours in the 10 lap novice event while Van Winden was tops in the new Rookie class.

Austin recovered from a mistake that took his car off the track on the first lap. He gradually worked his way through the field but still needed a miracle to pull off the win. It happened on the final lap when leader Shawn Hodge spun in turn 4 taking out 2 more of the front runners and opening the door for Austin to drive into victory lane. Roger Bushey of Odgensburg was second followed by Tim Lang, Leonard Washer of Mountain Grove and Robin Perrin.

Gaudet also skidded off the track in the early going of the Sportsman feature but recovered quickly only losing three positions. He passsed early leader Lance Willix of Theresa NY on a lap 14 restart and then headed off into the sunset with the win. Willix was second followed by Joyceville teenager Kyle Wilson, Jim Vock of Theresa NY and Adam Moore of Elgin.

VanWinden was particularly dominant in the 10 lap Rookie event taking the lead from Don Hall early and coasting to the victory. Chris Tremblay of Cornwall was second with Hall in the number three spot.

Defending track champion Lee Gill of LeFargeville NY took the 30 lap Modified main. Gill got past Chris Jones of Demorestville with 8 laps remaining. Jones who led the first 22 laps had to settle for third when Mark Hitchcock of Kingston got by on the final lap. Ben Tucker of Redwood NY and Bill Mullin of Iroquois rounded out the top 5.

Brockville’s Randy Earl went side by side with Mitchell Jock of Akewsasne for the first 3 laps before pulling away and winning the 15 lap Pro Stock event. Jock was second followed by Renfrew’s Todd Fletcher, Todd Raabe of Pembroke and Brockville’s Sheldon Hoogwerf.

Next Friday night, June 1st will feature a special Syracuse Qualifier for the Sportsman as well as action in all four other regular classes. The green flag drops at 7:30 pm.
