Two Drivers go from worst to first for wins on opening night
Sometimes if you are going to make a mistake or get involved in a minor accident, it better to do it as early in a race as possible. Two drivers proved that on opening night, Friday at Brockville Ontario Speedway.
North Augusta’s Randy Gaudet and Floyd Tommis of Akwesasne both recovered from first lap incidents to capture Sportsman and Pro Stock feature wins. Gaudet slowly worked his way back through the pack eventually passing the first and second place cars with one move on the back straightaway with 3 laps remaining. New York’s Jim Vock and Ron Wadforth of Picton ended up second and third respectively in the 20 lap event
Tommis was involved in a crunching four car crash in turn 1 on the first lap of the 15 lap Pro Stock main. His car was actually so attached to another, it took 10 minutes to separate the two. Tommis in just his fourth ever race, came back through the pack for the victory. Bill Eisele of Watertown NY and Brockville’s Randy Earl rounded out the top 3. Early leader Billy King of Hogansburg fell victim to a lap 7 fuel leak.
23 Modifieds took the green flag for their special 50 lap event. Brian MacDonald of Cornwall took the lead from the outside pole and survived numerous restarts to go wire to wire. 2000 Brockville Sportsman champ Ben Tucker of Redwood NYwas impressive as he took a couple of good runs at MacDonald in the late going but couldn’t put his new modified past Big Mac. Lee Gill of Lefargeville NY recovered from an early crash to finish 3rd.
The first ever 10 lap Rookie stock event went to Kees Van Winden of Cornwall. Dave Austin of Hardington dominated the 10 lap Novice event. All five classes will be back in action on Friday, May 26th at 7:30 p.m.
