Therrien and McCullough take Pro Stock and Novice titles
BROCKVILLE-The final two track titles were decided on Friday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway. It was a relatively easy night for Mark Therrien of Alexandria as he claimed his second straight Pro Stock crown. Things were considerably more interesting for Kingston’s Terry McCullough as he grabbed the Novice title.
Therrien led wire to wire holding off a late race challenge from Brockville’s Randy Earl to capture the Pro Stock feature. Earl twice got alongside in the closing laps but Therrien held him off for the feature win. Both were fortunate not to be involved in a horrifying heat race accident on the front straightaway that almost totalled the car of Brockville’s Sheldon Hoogwerf. No one was injured.
Todd Raabe of Pembroke did everything he could to win the Novice crown. Raabe won his heat race and dominated the 10 lap Novice feature scoring the victory. However, McCullough recovered from a lap 5 accident that resulted in 2 flat tires on his car to post a 6th place finish. The Kingston driver just needed 13th or better to claim the track championship.
Dale Planck of Homer NY continues to turn heads with his new Bicknell 2001 chassis. Planck won for the 3rd time in the car in the 4 times it has been in 358 Modified competition taking his 2nd straight at Brockville. Planck blasted past early leader Mark Hitchcock of Kingston on the 19th lap and pulled away from the field the rest of the way for the victory. Modified Track Champ Lee Gill of LaFargeville NY was second just in front of Hitchcock, Chico Dingwall of Brockville and Rich Hall of Athens.
The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club also made their only visit of the season to the fast quarter mile oval. Jeff Ackerman of New Berlin NY took the 50’s class victory. 60’s honours went to Pat Sonnenberg of Stevensville and Chris Brougham of LaFargeville NY was tops among the 70’s vintage machines.
The Sunoco Super DIRT Series rolls into the BOS next Friday night for the Jack May Pontiac 100 for the Modifieds. There will be a 25 lap $500 to win Pro Stock event and a 20 lap $200 to win Novice feature. The green flag drops at 7:30
