HURRICANE STEVE STRIKES AT THE B.O.S.

BROCKVILLE-Hurricane warnings were out across the Southeastern United States this week, one also should have been issued for Brockville Ontario Speedway. Steve Paine of Waterloo N.Y. continued what he calls his best season ever by winning the Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT 358 Jack May Pontiac 100 Friday night. It was Paine's second win in three events in this year's Mr. DIRT tour following a Labor day weekend triumph also in Eastern Ontario at Cornwall Motor Speedway.

Paine took over the lead on lap 49 and held off a determined challenge for a few laps from Kingston's Pat O Brien to score the win. Pete Bicknell of St. Catherines was second followed by O Brien and his brother Danny also of Kingston. Jeff Sykes of Edwards, N.Y. rounded out the top 5. Qualifying spots for Syracuse in October, unofficially went to Sykes and Brockville's Keith Chico Dingwall. Dale Planck of Homer, N.Y. led early opening up a big lead until tire problems forced him to the pits just prior to the midway point. A pair of accidents on lap 9 also took their toll on the field, one saw Brockville's Chris Herbison on his roof in turn 3. Herbison did manage to return late in the race.

It was also the final points night for both the Novice and Pro Stock championships. Mark Therrien's 7th place finish was good enough to clinch the Pro Stock crown for the Alexandria driver. Lee Ladouceur also of Alexandria captured the 15 lap event followed by Marcel Pecore of St. Andrew's West and a late charging Daryl Steele of Renfrew. New York's Roger Bushy claimed the Novice crown with an 8th place finish in the 10 lap feature. Dave Austin of Glenburnie took his first Novice feature win of the year holding off New York's Earl Simmons and Jody Beckstead of Lunenburg.

The 1999 racing season at the Brockville Ontario Speedway will come to a close on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. with a Monster Enduro sponsored by Kanes Towing.
