MODIFIED AND SPORTSMAN TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS BOTH DECIDED BY 5 POINTS

O'BRIEN AND GAUDET CLAIM TITLES

Five points. It's the equivalent of one heat race victory. It turned out to be the margin of victory in both the 358 Modified and Sportsman divisions after a dramatic Friday night of racing at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Double features made the plot lines even more interesting on Fan Appreciation Night.

Veteran Danny O Brien of Kingston claimed the Modified title by just 5 points over 17 year old rookie Frankie Caprara of Watertown, N.Y.. It was a night to remember for the youngster however as he claimed his first feature win of 1999 at the B.O.S.. Caprara went to the outside groove at mid race of the second feature of the night and powered around Chico Dingwall of Brockville on the last corner of last lap for the victory by half a car length. O Brien's third was good enough for the title . The first modified tilt was taken by Todd Stewart of Bath who opened up a big lead early and held off a late charge by O Brien. Defending track champ Paul Moreland of Brockville was third and managed to finish third in the points standings as well.

The Sportsman points chase was also interesting with Randy Gaudet of North Augusta defending his crown by 5 points over Matt Butler of Canton N.Y.. Butler did everything he could on this night finishing a close second to Ron Evoy of Brockville in the first feature and then winning the second 20 lap event. However, Gaudet put together a fifth and second of his own to win the season long points battle. Sam Vanderlinden of Athens posted a third place showing in the first feature with Rich Hall of Athens rounding the top 3 in the second go round.

The Pro Stock and Novice divisions still have 2 points nights to go in their season, with both running double features as well to make out for rain on August 20. Alexandria's Mark Therrien and Marcel Pecore of St. Andrew's West split the wins in the Pro Stock division. Davey Wilgosh of Lyn and Mark Grier split the honors in the 10 lap Novice events. The second novice event was red flagged on lap 5 after a horrifying crash right under the flag stand. The cars of both Jason Riemersma and Art Brown were heavily damaged however both drivers escaped injury.

The 1999 season at the B.O.S continues with a regular show September 10 and the Mr. Dirt Series 100 lap event for Modifieds on September 17th.
