McGarvey, Fenton, Bender and Weisgarber Repeat as Stine Wins First at Central PA Speedway

7/9/04
Feeding from the excitement of last weeks Yankee Doodle 50 all divisions were up for grabs and Shawn McGarvey, Denny Fenton, Chad Bender and Denny Weisgarber took advantage and picked up repeat wins as Mike Stine of Smithmill won his first Stocker Chevrolet Subaru Small Block Modified event of 2004.
The Shortway Services Inc. Pro Street Stocks were first onto the racing surface and J.R. Emig and Skip Lindermuth were out front showing the way. Flagmen Artie Luzier’s initial green flag did not last long as an incident between Lindermuth and Dayton Nixon brought out the red flag. On the restart, Nixon with residual damage from the earlier incident broke and rolled his machine over at the end of the front stretch. With the green flag waving once again Doug Tibbens jumped to the point and set the early pace. Tenth place starter Denny Fenton wasted no time moving through the field and by lap three slipped by Todd Mathews for second and started to run down Tibbens. Fenton was able to catch the leader and while working lap five made the move and took over the lead. On lap ten Emory Reinhart Jr. moved into the second position and it was his turn to run down the leader but time ran out and Fenton picked up his fourth win of the season followed by Reinhart, Jason Walker, Tibbens and Ron Mitchell.
Next onto the racing surface were the Budweiser Late Model’s and after leading forty nine of fifty laps a week ago before losing the water pump on the last lap, it was redemption time for Shawn McGarvey. McGarvey wasted no time moving from his third place starting position getting by T.J. Fleck and Ed Connor to lead lap number one. Once out front McGarvey began to open up a lead as the rookie Fleck tried to keep the leader in sight. Back in the pack eleventh and twelfth place starters Jerry Lower and Jason Witherite were busy slicing and dicing through the field in an attempt to get to the front and challenge for the lead. As the laps wound down Fleck and second place point man Dwayne Taneyhill were keeping pace with the McGarvey and just simply ran out of laps as McGarvey gained his second 2004 win at the three eights mile speed plant.
The following event would be for the Stocker Chevrolet Subaru Small Block Modifieds and with three time feature winner Brent Boyer on the pole it was a safe bet that number four was just a few laps away. Flanked by Ron Butterworth, Boyer immediately jumped to the point and opened a commanding lead. Kevin Dickson was able to slip by Butterworth while working lap five and was easily the fastest machine on the track while running down the lead. Dickson knew he was just about out of time but a caution flew on the white flag lap setting up a green, white, checkers shootout between Boyer, Dickson and sixth place starter Mike Stine. On the restart it seemed as though Boyer had a bad start and Dickson moved to the outside and was around the leader before reaching the flag stand. Before getting to the end of the straight Dickson’s machine would throw the power steering belt and he slid very high in turn one. The wily veteran Stine watched the events unfold in front of him and took advantage moving his machine out front to lead the final two laps and gather his first Central PA Speedway victory in many years. Boyer recovered to finish second followed by Bill Krause, Derek Rodkey and Bob Garvey.
Next would be the twelve lap main event for the Lias Tier Pure Street Stocks. Chad Bender, who showed his muscle in heat race action, proved he was on cue tonight by moving from the fourth position to lead lap number one. Once out front the path to victory lane was not an easy one as Bender was forced to hold off the advances of Todd Bainey. Working lap six Aaron Walker move by Bainey for the second position but just two laps later Walker would be sidelined for the remainder of the event with a broke axel. Last weeks feature winner and current point leader Jason Bainey was next to pick up the chase. With the laps winding down J. Bainey was not able to catch Bender as he went on to garner his second victory before the midway point of the season. Behind the leader were J. Bainey, Ryan Jacoby, Dan Clark (up from twelfth) and Frank Little.
Last to leave pit lane this evening would be the Pepsi Chargers. Racing rookie Brandon Connor would make up the front row along side of Don Lucas. At the waving of the green, five cars side by side would dive into corner number one. Trying to win his second feature in as many weeks, last place starter Jason Peters moved to the high side through the corner and was picking up several positions when the blew a tire and was retired for the evening. Leading lap number one would be Lucas but it would not last long as Rob Williams moved by for the lead. Jeff Chambers took his turn out front grabbing the point on lap four. Darren Lucas would move into second on the same lap and followed Chambers until lap six when Denny Weisgarber moved by and began to chase the leader. With two laps to go, Weisgarber was on the rear bumper of Chambers and put on the winning move to get by and lead the final two circuits to pick up his third victory of the season. Behind Weisgarber were Chambers, Darren Lucas, Mark Vail and Don Lucas.
