Bailey and LaFrance big winners at Cornwall as Sprints visit
It was almost ladies night during the lone visit of the Empire Super Sprints to Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday night. Bill Bailey had other ideas however as he made a bold move to take the lead from Erin Crocker and went on to win the 25 lap sprint car event.
Mike Stelter lead the majority of the way in the feature run until Crocker using the outside groove to her advantage charged up from her 11th starting position to claim the top spot on lap 18th. Bailey tracked down the young lady and made the winning move in turn 4 sliding into the side of Crocker’s machine with 3 laps remaining and getting on the power first to take the lead for good. Crocker was credited with second followed by Stelter, Don Sharp Junior and ESS points leader Mike Lutz.
Stephane LaFrance closed out a good weekend with a dominating performance in the 30 lap Modified event. LaFrance picked up the top spot on the 7th lap and then survived a series of restarts to go back to back with a win at Brockville on Friday evening. Dave Heaslip used a final lap restart to get past by Laurent Ladouceur for second spot. The third place finish was good enough however to put Ladouceur into the early season points lead. Lee Ladouceur and Kayle Robidoux rounded out the fast five.
The 20 lap Pro Stock race was a classic two car battle between Dave Bissonnette and Joey Ladouceur. Ladouceur gave up the early advantage to Bissonnette who never gave it back. Ladouceur pressured the Apple Hill driver lap after lap but couldnt find a way around. Mitchell Jock ended up third followed by Denis Gauvreau and Stephane Lebrun.
Andrew Russell claimed the 20 lap Rookie Stock event. Russell was running second when the leader went off the track with 2 laps to go. Dan Lortie was second in front of Ernie Cree, Kurtis McPhee and Nico Leblanc.
The Speedway returns to action next Sunday night at 7pm with a full race program featuring all four divisions, along with a special adult tire race..
