MCCREADIE TAKES THE MOLSON CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL AT CORNWALL

CORNWALL-Tim McCreadie was the fastest car in the closing laps of last year’s Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series event at Cornwall Motor Speedway but had to settle for third. This year he found the right groove alot earlier. McCreadie took the lead with around 15 laps to go and captured the Molson Canadian International 100 on Sunday night and the $8700 first place money that went along with it.

Todd Burley set fast time in time trails with a 13.53 second lap around the fast quarter mile oval. However, it was Chuck Bower on the pole when the field of 30 cars took the green flag. Gary Tomkins took the early lead, fending off numerous challenges from Burley in the early going. Tomkins would hold the top spot until lap 61. Billy Decker, the only car that was constantly running the top groove from almost the beginning of the race then picked up the lead. McCreadie followed Decker’s line to grab second and then created one of his own. He started running in the middle of the track. He caught and passed Decker in turn 1 and would lead the rest of the way. Alan Johnson made some great moves in the final 10 laps to grab second in a torrid three way battle, Decker was third followed by Kenny Tremont and Tomkins. Burley, Vic Coffey, Steve Paine, Steve Poirer and Bower rounded out the top 10. Cornwall regular Mark Hitchcock had a great run in his small block coming home in the lead lap in the 13th position after qualifying through the heats.

McCreadie was very complimentary about the Cornwall race track as he celebrated in victory lane. "This is just a great place to race, there were three grooves out there, I’d love to come here and race a Big Block here every week."

Mark Therrien made a magnificent move on lap 11 of the Late Model feature and parlayed that into his second straight feature victory. Therrien was riding third when he dived down low down the back straight under the front two vehicles to grab the lead for good. Marcel Pecore was second a full straightaway behind and just a half car length in front of Dave Bissonnette at the finish. Mitchell Jock was fourth and Gilles Godard fifth.

The night closed out with the 15 lap Duke Stock feature with Kees VanWinden winning his third of the season and second in a row. VanWinden was bumped on the last circuit by Gaetan Amesse who settled for the number two spot but it failed to phase the former Rookie champ. Richard Turcotte was third with Greg Ezard and Dave Renaud rounding out the fast five.

Next Sunday night at Cornwall Motor Speedway features a full race card in all four divisions in addition to a Demolition Derby and the annual Banner contest. The green flag drops at 7pm.
