Dingwall and LaFrance Split Twin 20's inCornwall Opener
A couple of Brockvilledrivers split the Modified spoils on opening night at CornwallMotor Speedway on Sunday. Chico Dingwall and Stephane LaFrancecaptured victories in the twin 20 lap features before a hardycrowd at the fast quarter mile oval.
LaFrance started upfront in the first main and led all twenty laps withstanding alate challenge from Joel Doiron. Mark Hitchcock, KevinFetterly and Chris Jones rounded out the fast five.
The second Modifiedevent was caution filled. Lee Ladouceur led in the early goinggiving up the top spot on a lap 8 restart. Brian MacDonaldassumed the lead with Dingwall slowly working his way in.Dingwall then made a daring move down the back straight totake the number one position and grab his first ever Modifiedfeature win at Cornwall and just the third of his racingcareer. Laurent Ladouceur was second followed across thefinish line by MacDonald, Jones and Billy Cook.
The 20 lap Late Modelfeature also featured numerous caution periods. Mitchell Jockusing the same car that took Randy Earl to the 2001 tracktitle was the winner. Jock took over the lead on the 10thlap and stayed out of trouble the rest of the way. Roy Tarbellwas second just in front of Marc Therrien who tore backthrough the field from a early incident to grab third. GeorgeRenaud and Dave Marshall were fourth and fifth respectively.
The biggest cheer on achilly night came from the results of the 15 lap Duke Stockevent. Tammy Jalbert opened the season in the same way sheclosed last year, with a victory. Jalbert rocketed into thelead on a restart with 5 laps to go to score the win. DominicGauvreau was a close second followed by Gaetan Amesse, RandyAndre and Wayne Marsolais.
It appeared that RonTyo was headed for the win in the 12 lap Rookie sprint.However, Tyo got tangled up with a lapped car with just 5 lapsto go allowing Roch Aubin to take the checkered flag. StewartMullin challenged in the late going but couldn’t get pastAubin. Rosco Garreau was third.
