Happy Birthday Canada

On Track fireworks on Canada Day at Cornwall

It was a wild Canada Day race night at Cornwall Motor Speedway. The night had a little bit of everything good wheel to wheel action, green to checkered flag feature races and unfortunately some unexpected fireworks and punishing mishaps. When the night was over everyone was safe and a car numbered 95 had won both of the twin 20 Modified features.

The 95J of Dan Jalbert took the first Modified feature. Jalbert used the low groove to pass points leader Bill Mullin with just a lap to go and take his second feature win of the season. Mullin who had led the entire race was forced to settle for second followed by Chris Jones, Chico Dingwall and Joel Doiron. The event was red flagged after a high impact crash on the front straight that resulted in 13 cars scattered right across the entire track entering turn 1. A couple of drivers were shaken up in the melee but were looked at in the ambulance and released.

The plain 95 of Mark Hitchcock won the second 20 lap Mod main. Hitchcock took the top spot from Dave Heaslip on the 8th lap and cruised from there to the win in the caution free race. Heaslip who had his car badly damaged in the first 20 managed to finish 2nd. Rookie Jocelyn Perrault put in his best Cornwall finish yet in third followed by Kevin Fetterly and Jones.

The Late Model feature also went the 20 laps from green to checkered. Mitchell Jock led every lap en route to his second ever Cornwall win. Just as they came across the start finish line second place finishing Joey Ladouceur and third place Stephane Lebrun came together sending Lebrun into the wall were he was hit by three more cars. Lebrun’s car erupted into flames from the impact, however he quickly got out of his car and then helped track flagman Pete Bissonnette pull Dave Bissonnette and Louis Jackson from their cars safely as the flames continued. Marc Therrien was credited with fourth with Randy Earl coming home 5th, his worst run of the entire season at Cornwall.

Defending track champion Stephane Lemire took over the Duke Stock points lead with a win in their 15 lap event. Ken Sproule was second followed by Mike Tremblay, Randy Andre and Al Dion. Rookie honours went to Chris Tremblay for the fourth time this season over Rosco Garreau and Glen Dorie

Next week at Cornwall Motor Speedway, the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series for Big Block Modifieds makes it’s only visit to Ontario this season for the 100 lap Molson Canadian International. DIRT stars like Steve Paine, Danny Johnson and Bob McCreadie will take to the high banked quarter mile for a purse of $40,000. Time trials take place at 6 pm with qualifying heats at 7pm. The Late Models and Duke Stocks will also be competing on Sunday, July 8th.
