Hearn takes Molson Canadian International at Cornwall

When the chips were down Brett Hearn had saved a little bit for the final sprint to the finish on Sunday night at Cornwall Motor Speedway. The Sussex NJ driver turned some of his fastest laps of the race in the final 10 laps as he took the Molson Canadian International 100, event number 11 of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT series for Big Block Modifieds.

The night began with Tim McCreadie setting fast time amongst 46 cars in qualifying turning a lap of 13.029 seconds around the fast quarter mile oval. After the drawing for positions, Tim Fuller and Hearn made up the front row for the 100 lap event with a purse of $40,000.

Fuller went out to the early lead when the green flag dropped. Hearn wasn’t too far behind and took the top spot on lap 18. He would lead the rest of the way to take home a winner’s cheque for $8,700. However, it didn’t look like it was going to be easy as a late race caution came out with 20 laps remaining. Billy Decker who had worked his way into second was turning laps 2 tenths of a second faster than Hearn. When the final green flag dropped Hearn started ripping off laps well under 15 seconds and was pulling away when he passed under the checkered flag.

"This track was a good as I have ever seen it", said Hearn in victory lane afterwards as he explained how he could turn such fast laps in the late going. "It was a real blast."

Decker was second with a hard charging Tim McCreadie in third after picking up several spots in the final 10 lap sprint. Danny Johnson was fourth followed by Fuller. The second five were Doug Hoffman, Alan Johnson, Steve Paine, Kenny Tremont and Chuck Bower. Joel Doiron was the top local car finishing 16th, he was also the highest finishing small block in the field..

Randy Earl continues to be the dominant force in the Late Model division. Earl took his fifth feature win of the season in 7 events. Earl flew past defending track champ Marc Therrien on a lap 13 restart and led the rest of the way. Daryl Steele got past Therrien on the final restart for second spot in the 20 lap event. Mitchell Jock and Billy King rounded out the top 5.

Stephane Lemire is way on his way to defending his Duke Stock crown. Lemire took his 4th feature win of the season despite having to come through the field twice due to early mishaps. Frank Belair was third followed by Donnie Benedict, Gilles Pilon and Stephane Phillippe.

The next event at Cornwall Motor Speedway comes up next Sunday night with a full race program including the second leg in the Doiron Engineering Cup for the Modifieds along with a Demolition Derby. The green flag drops at 7 pm.
