Luc Plante(s) Himself in the Winner's Circle, June 20, 1999
#24Luc Plante picked up his 2nd modified feature win of season at the Cornwall Motor Speedway after a thrilling battle with Danny O'Brien. Plante inherited the lead when, then leader, Buck White looped in between turns 3 and 4 bringing out the caution on lap 9. O'Brien, who started the feature 15th, worked his way into 2nd by lap 23. Plante and O'Brien ran neck and neck for the final 7 laps but Plante hung for the win. The win also marked the 2nd for Plante in the Doiron Engineering Cup (a 4 race series with the winner picking up $1,000 at the end of the year).
That was the highlight of a night in which racecars ran 282 laps. The high number of laps were necessary because of a shortened program Sunday, June 13th because of rain. Danny O'Brien picked up the modified feature win in the first 30-lap feature. Plante (2) and O'Brien (3) are the only two drivers to pick up feature wins at Cornwall this season.
In the 2nd Late Model feature, "Bulldog" Dave Bissonette made a triumphant return after a lengthy absence and worked his way into the winner's circle. Bissonette, a former track champion at Cornwall, hasn't raced since a work accident last fall. It was the first Late Model feature that Eric Gauvreau didn't win. He picked up the victory in the earlier Late Model feature.
Jody Beckstead won both Duke stock features, making it 4 wins in 5 races this year. Yvon Morin broke Robin Laframboise's streak of 4 wins in the Rookie class.
Race fans are in for a special treat on Sunday, June 27th. Doug Rose and the Green Mamba Jet Car will enhance a complete racing program. Rose will thrill fans with a fire and smoke show at intermission and then, at the end of the night, he'll burn a car to the ground with the Mamba Jet Car. It's regular admission for the event.
A note for fans to remember. Because of the added races to this week's program, the photo and autograph night has been rescheduled for July 4th. Kids (and adults too) can meet their favourite driver and get an autograph and photo during that week's intermission.
