PMC THE KEY TO VICTORY LANE FOR JELLEY AND HARPER AT L.V.
West Lebanon, NY- Wayne Jelley wheeled his PMC chassis #35 to the 30-lap modified victory at the West Lebanon speed plant Saturday night. It was a career first big block modified win for the Pownal, Vermont native. Frank Harper wielded his PMC chassis #25 to his second win of the season in the 20-lap sportsman main event. Buddy Hencke captured his second win of the season in the 20-lap pro stock feature. Other winners on this night included Larry Megan in the rookie pro stocks and Jim Duncan in the four-cylinder enduro. Ryan Coon, Glenn Miller, Kevin Hilt and Pete Wiegand won the pure stock features. An extra special thanks to our friends and KEY BANK and HEAVY HAULER for sponsoring the night’s racing program.
The modified feature certainly had its problems getting started on Saturday night. Several early race incidents slowed the program. When racing finally got started Russ Reckner was in the lead. It was a great run for the young driver as he led over half of the modified feature. Some great racing action between Matt Quinn and Brett Hearn just before halfway for the third position. The two raced side by side for several laps before Hearn took the advantage on lap 14. At the halfway point it was Reckner, Jelley, Hearn, Quinn and Andy Bachetti.
Jelley began to close in on the back of Reckner’s car and challenge him for the lead on lap 16. Jelley moved his K&F Modular Homes #35 into the lead on lap 18. Hearn suddenly slowed at the pit entrance on lap 19 with a left rear flat tire. He was able to return, but was out of contention for victory. Bachetti and Tremont moved around Reckner into second and third on the restart. Quinn’s bad luck continued as he stopped in turn one on lap 21 and was done for the evening. Tremont moved around Bachetti for the runner-up position on lap 22.
Jelley rolled to victory lane for the very first time in his career in a big block modified at the Valley. Jelley was quick to thank his brothers for all their support in helping him get to victory lane. Tremont had to settle for second with Bachetti third and Chris Whitehead fourth. A driver that was on the move throughout the race was Donnie Corellis. He started 26th and finished fifth. J.R. Heffner’s streak of top ten finishes ended Saturday night as he finished eleventh.
A correction to last week’s modified story. Guy Sheldon did not blow a motor, which caused an early race crash as was reported in the press release. A car ahead of Sheldon dropped oil on the track and caused Sheldon to make hard contact with the turn three wall. My apologies to the Devine-Sheldon team for that mistake.
The sportsman feature got off to a much better start than their modified counterparts. Chad Pierce held the lead for the first nine laps before Harper made his way passed. The top two drivers in the point standings had interesting nights indeed. A heat race altercation almost cost Art Collins a chance to even start the feature. But he apologized for his behavior and was allowed to race. He spun in the main event on lap nine and collected Kyle Hoffman. Collins was able to continue and finished fifth, but Hoffman was done for the night. K.C. Goewey won his heat and the special $100 to win sportsman dash. But a flat tire on lap nine send him to the back of the back. He was able to work his way back into the top five until the right rear tire went flat again. This time with only two laps remaining and relegating him out of the top fifteen.
Several late cautions did not give anyone a chance to get to Harper and he easily went to victory lane for the second time this season. " This is the most perfect racecar I have ever had’ Harper said in victory lane. "I have to thank Pete Chuckta from PMC, Dan Bedell my motor builder and all my great sponsors for all the help." Lorne Browe came across the finish line in second with Bobby Knipe third, Ed Harkins fourth and Collins fifth.
The first lap of the pro stock feature was full of activity. Rob Yetman made contact with outside wall in turn four; Danny Sanchez went to the pits and last week’s winner Bill Lobdell stopped on the track. Sanchez was the only car done for the night. Paul Rogers was the early race leader until Hencke got around him. Hencke’s night looked like it might end early as the hood came flying off in turn three, but it seemed to have little or no effect on his racer. The battle to watch on the track was for second back to seventh. You could throw a blanket over all the cars they were so close. At the halfway point it was Hencke, Robbie Speed, Jim Langenback, Chris Crews and Yetman.
Two late race cautions put the wily veteran of Langenback right on the back lid of Hencke. The two raced hard on the final lap and it came down to a drag race for the win. Hencke out motored Langenback for the narrow win. Yetman recovered from his early race incident to finish third. Speed was fourth and Crews rounded out the top five.
