MARSHALL MOD MAIN MASTER, BRIAN SANDSTEDT & BILL LOBDELL JR GET CAREER FIRSTS

West Lebanon, NY-If you paid attention to the weather forecast Saturday night it looked like a night of racing would have been impossible to complete. But, the only storm that hit Lebanon Valley Saturday night came from Ridgefield, CT. and had Marshall Oil on the side of it. Eddie Marshall dominated the 30-lap modified feature for his seventeenth career victory. The 358-modifieds made their first appearance of the 2004 season and Brett Hearn won the 24-lap feature. Brian Sandstedt won his first career 20-lap sportsman main and Bill Lobdell Jr won the 20-lap pro stock feature. Also a career first for Lobdell. Ron Jacobsen was awarded the win in the rookie pro stock feature after the first place car was disqualified. The winners in the three pure stock races were Phil Wood, Pete Wiegand and Nick Hilt Jr. William?s Lumber and Home Centers and Wohrle's Quality Foods were the primary sponsors on the night.

For the second week in a row the modified feature got off to an inauspicious start. One of last week?s winners, Guy Sheldon, blew a motor going into turn three and dumped oil on the racing surface. Nine cars piled into the turn three wall when they hit the oil slick. One of the early retirees was Matt Quinn who has finished out of the top twenty several weeks already this season. Andy Bachetti?s night came to an early end on lap three as engine problems sidelined him. Marshall and Kenny Tremont were up to second and third by lap four. Marshall made his bid for the lead on lap five getting around Ron Dwyer. Tremont moved up to the runner-up position the next lap. The final caution flag of the race flew on lap eight.

Marshall absolutely dominated the second half of the race and his lead was never in jeopardy. The best action in the race was for sixth place between Wayne Jelley and Dwyer. Jelley would win that battle on the track. Another story late in the race was J.R. Heffner. Dating back to May of 2003 he has not finished outside the top ten in a modified feature. A early race incident dropped Heffner deep in the pack and it looked like his consecutive finishes record would be gone. Heffner did recover to finish tenth and keep the record intact. It was Marshall?s 17th modified win at Lebanon Valley, which ties him with his dad, Ernie Marshall, on the All-time win list. Tremont shook off the bad luck of one week ago to finish second. Denny Soltis was third, Rich Ricci Jr was fourth and Brett Hearn rounded out the top five.

The 358-modifieds were added to the card Saturday night. K.C. Goewey took the lead on lap three of the race and held it through much of the event. Hearn took second from Wayne Jelley just before the halfway point of the race and started to challenge Goewey for the lead on lap 13. Lap traffic became a factor on the 15th lap and helped Hearn get past Goewey for good on lap 17. A final caution flag on lap 22 bunched the field up for a two-lap shoot-out, but Hearn easily took the win in the Four Star #4. Jelley rolled past Goewey for second and earned a starting spot for the 358-modified race at Super Dirt Week. Goewey had to settle for third with Heffner fourth and Tremont fifth. Donnie Corellis started the race dead last and finished an impressive eighth.

Brian Sandstedt took the lead at the start of the 20-lap sportsman feature and never looked back. His Darcy Construction #12 was on a rail as he survived many early race restarts on his way to his first career victory. Defending champion Art Collins got spun around on lap three, but did recover for a sixth place finish. Carmen Carnibucci had a hard crash with another racer and was transported to a local hospital. No word on his condition, but he was awake and alert according to reports at the track. Goewey was looking to spoil yet another driver?s first chance at victory as he moved into second on lap 18. But unlike last week he ran out of time and was not able to catch the front running Sandstedt. Ed Harkins was third, Frank Harper was fourth and Lorne Browe was fifth.

Bill Lobdell took the lead on a lap three restart and walked away handily with his first career victory in the 20-lap pro stock feature. For the final seven laps of the race Scott Govertsen and Robbie Speed ran door to door lap after lap with Govertsen getting the advantage in the end. Paul LaRochelle came home second and Rob Yetman had another top five run in fifth. Hats off to the Blackburn family once again. Danny Sanchez blew a motor in his racer during the heat races. The Blackburns went home to get the car normally piloted by Dan Blackburn so Sanchez could race in the feature.
