VONDOHREN WINS THIRD OF SEASON, WOJNAR GETS FIRST LATE MODEL
WIN AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 28, 2001 . . . Former track champion
Craig VonDohren drove the Mrs T'S Pierogies sponsored entry
to victory Saturday night at Grandview Speedway. The third
win of the season for the veteran modified racer came in the
Artic Cat 30-lap NASCAR Modified stock car feature race. And
in the 20-lap feature for NASCAR Late Model stock cars Chris
Wojnar was able to wheel his Mullican's Auto Sales/Dames
Chevrolet mount to victory, the first of his career.
Todd Heydt lead the 29 car starting field at the start
of the 30-lap feature for modified stock cars. Just four laps
into the main event Glenn Strunk, looking for his second win
of the season, took the top spot after starting fifth. In
fact Strunk made a move on the outside, the high groove, to
get by the top two to take the first spot that may still have
fans talking to themselves.
Strunk, driving Norm Hansell's Norm's Save Station
entry, was in front of the field, holding off strong
challenges by Craig VonDohren for many laps. In fact
VonDohren was kept busy by Todd Heydt trying to get second
spot for several laps.
On the 21st lap VonDohren was able to get by Strunk in
turn four, when the two made contact coming off turn four.
Strunk bumped the boiler plate guard rail. Strunk later
pointed out that his power steering system had failed two
laps earlier. He dropped out just one lap later.
Once in front the Barto, PA racer had a relatively easy
time in winning his third feature of the season and
collecting $2,200 for his efforts. VonDohren continues to
lead the point standings in the chase for the NASCAR Modified
title at the Berks County oval. Second spot went to two time
champion Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville) in a late race charge
toward the front. Third place was earned by defending track
champion Jeff Strunk (Bethel) followed by Todd Heydt
(Boyertown) and Meme DeSantis (Temple).
The 20-lap NASCAR Late Model feature saw Chris Wojnar
take the lead on the first lap and lead all 20 laps as he
earned his first career win. In the closing laps the Perkasie
racer had to hold off the challenges of teenager Sam
Schlosberg and Chuck Sennott. At the finish Wojnar had just a
narrow lead over the second place finisher Sam Schlosberg
(Green Lane). Third spot went to Chuck Sennott
(Gilbertsville) followed by Kyle Pensinger (Lyons Station)
and Ed Trimbur (Eagleville).
With a sixth place finish in the feature John Durling
took over the top spot in the chase for the late model
championship.
Winners in the NASCAR Modified qualifying events, 59
modifieds on hand, were Todd Heydt, Mike Bailey, Tom
Mayberry, Bob Trapper and Duane Howard. Consolation event
wins went to Randy Bailey, Terry Meitzler and Keith
Brightbill. Howard earned $585 for his victory in the three
lap Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash.
Jason Miller, Ron Chrisman and Terry Snyder won the Late
Model qualifiers while Josh Huber topped the field in the
consolation.
Doug Rose and his Green Mamba Jet Car got the attention
of the fans when he lit up the jet engine and burned a
Cadillac to the ground. The ultimate definition of "road
rage."
One of the richest and most prestigious racing events of
the season comes to Grandview Speedway on Saturday,
August 4, when the $10,000 to win 31st annual Forrest
Rogers Memorial 50-lap championship is presented. The
NASCAR Modified Classic always attracts a stellar field
of racers. And there is a full show of NASCAR Late Model
stock car racing.
Last year's winner Jeff Strunk will be back to defending
his title against Craig VonDohren, Duane Howard, Kerry Kratz,
Glenn Strunk, Ray Swinehart, Chip Slocum, Meme DeSantis and
others.
The rain date for the Forrest Rogers Memorial is
Saturday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m.
