MAYBERRY AND SCHUTZ WIN NASCAR FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 21, 2001 . . . For the fourth time
this season Tom Mayberry was able to wheel the Mike Kelly
owned, A&T Chevy sponsored entry to victory at Grandview
Speedway on Saturday night. The victory, by a comfortable
margin, came in the 30-lap Hatfield Quality Meats sponsored
NASCAR Modified feature race.
And for the first time this season Chuck Schutz, back in
late model competition after a couple seasons in the NASCAR
Modifieds, drove his own Schutz Competition/Zeigler
Enterprises mount to victory in the 20-lap NASCAR Late Model
feature.
Twenty nine cars took starter Donnie Miller's green with
Ray Swinehart, a two time champion, lasted less than one lap.
An accident as the field came toward the green saw Swinehart,
tangling with others, eliminated from the field. Jeff
Sechrist set the pace for the first two laps. Rick Schaffer,
the all time leading modified feature winner at the Berks
County oval, took the lead on the third circuit of the one-
third-mile, clay oval. At the 10-lap marker, after several
laps of battling for the top position, Tom Mayberry was able
to get by Schaffer on a restart after a caution.
Once in front Mayberry had a relative easy time of it
leading by half-a-lap at one point. Numerous cautions dotted
the program and Mayberry was able to maintain control of the
top spot until the checkered flag fell. The win was the 33rd
career victory for the Sellersville, PA resident at Grandview
and that includes an unofficial, non-points feature event win
earlier in the week. Mayberry earned $2,200 for his winning
efforts.
Defending track champion Jeff Strunk (Bethel) was able to
grab second with a strong final laps effort. Chip Slocum
(Ewing Township, NJ) grabbed third followed by early leader
Rick Schaffer (Woxall) and current point leader Craig
VonDohren (Barto).
The 20-lap feature for the NASCAR Late Models saw rookie
Steve Todorow put his Juniper Auto Body entry in front of the
pack at the start and set the pace until the 15th lap. It
looked like Todorow would be able to grab his first career
win.
Chuck Schutz, coming from 10th starting spot, took the
lead when Todorow got wide and that allowed the challenger to
get under him for the top spot. Once in front the Pottstown
racer was able to hold off challenges from Ed Trimbur
(Eagleville) to get the win. Third spot went to Jason Miller,
another rookie, from New Tripoli followed by Bill Henning
(Lansdale) and Kyle Pensinger (Lyon Station).
Qualifying heats for the NASCAR Modifieds went to Jeff
Strunk, Chip Slocum, Meme DeSantis, Brian Kressley and Craig
VonDohren. The consolation events were won by Cliff Quinn,
Duane Howard and Bob Trapper. The Automotive Machining
Services Cash Dash, worth $395, went to Jeff Strunk.
In the late model qualifying events the wins went to
Terry Snyder, Jason Miller and John Durling.
Doug Rose and the Green Mamba Jet Car, always a fan
favorite, will run some "hot laps" on the one-third-mile,
banked clay oval. And he will burn a passenger car to the
ground. WATCH WHERE YOU PARK IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND.
Fans in the stands will be able to feel the heat of the Green
Mamba Jet Car. It will be ARCTIC CAT NIGHT with NASCAR
Modifieds and NASCAR Late Models (along with Doug Rose)
running in at least 12 events of stock car racing starting at
7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 28.
