RICK TODOROW AND MEME DESANTIS WIN NASCAR FEATURES AT
GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY
Bechtelsville, PA July 7, 2001. . . Current NASCAR Late Model
point leader Rick Todorow wheeled his Juniper Auto Body
sponsored entry to victory in the Firecracker 40 Late Model
championship race at Grandview Speedway. And in the 30-lapper
for NASCAR Modifieds it was Meme DeSantis, coming back from a
wild flip the previous Saturday, driving the Take Out Inc.
sponsored mount to a close win over former track champion
Terry Meitzler.
The 40-lapper for late models, the biggest event of the
season for that division of competition, saw rookie Steve
Todorow (son of the feature winner) take the lead at the
start. The youngster was able to lead for the first four laps
before spinning and catching Bill Henning sending both to the
rear. John Durling got the top spot with the Golden Chevy #7
and was in front of the pack until the 27th lap.
In a feature dotted by a number of cautions Rick Todorow,
the Quakertown, PA auto body and auto repair shop operator,
was able to work his way up to first, coming from back in the
pack to earn the Sherwin Williams Hard Charger award, on the
27th lap and hold on to the top spot until the checkered flag
fell. For Todorow it was his first Firecracker 40 win and
increased his advantage in the chase for his first NASCAR
Late Model title at the Berks County oval.
Second spot went to the 2000 winner Kyle Pensinger
(Lyons) followed by John Durling (Reading), Chuck Sennott
(Gilbertsville) and Chuck Schutz (Pottstown).
In the 30-lap main event for the NASCAR Modifieds Danny
Erb was quick to the front of the pack and lead for the first
three laps. Randy Stoudt was in front on the fourth circuit
of the one-third-mile, banked clay oval and lead until he
tangled with several cars as part of a multi car accident.
Brian Kressley charged to the front on the restart after the
caution with Danny Erb and Terry Meitzler giving chase. At
the seventeen lap marker Meme DeSantis was second and giving
Kressley a battle for the lead. With 21 laps in the record
book DeSantis, who had started 13th, took the top spot and
held on to grab the $2200 first place money. The Temple, PA
racer was able to hold off strong challenges from Terry
Meitzler (Kutztown) to get the win. Third spot went to Brian
Kressley (New Tripoli) followed by Kerry Kratz
(Bechtelsville) and Randy Bailey (Kutztown).
Qualifying event wins went to Craig VonDohren, the
current NASCAR Modified point leader, Randy Stoudt, Tom
Mayberry, Chip Slocum and Terry Meitzler. Consolation races
were won by Kenny Gilmore, Randy Bailey and Donny Erb. The
Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash went to Tom Mayberry.
Glenn Strunk, driving the Norm's Save Station entry, charged
from 30th to finish 8th to unofficially earn the Timber Wolf
Hard Charger Award worth $200.
In the late models it was Chuck Schutz, Buddy Wharton and
Kyle Pensinger getting the wins in qualifying events while
Mike Bedell won the consolation and Kyle Pensinger won the
Sherwin Williams Paints Cash Dash.
