KENNY GRUBER WINS MODIFIED FEATURE, RANDY STOUDT TOPS IN LATE

MODELS, KEVIN WELSH WON THE LEGENDS FEATURE, TERRY MEITZLER

IS THE MODIFIED CHAMPION FOR 1999, MORE THAN 130 CARS IN

COMPETITION AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

BECHTELSVILLE, PA. AUGUST 21, 1999 . . . "There was a pretty

good cushion there, and it kind of rough with the big dogs

coming up (Mayberry, Gilmore and Jon Keller). I knew those

guys were going to be tough. The track was getting harder. We

kept using the cushion.(And it worked) We got the car running

pretty good in the last three weeks. I think we will be ready

for the Sixer (the rich THP Freedom 76'er coming up on

September 11 offering $20,000 plus to win)," said veteran

modified racer Kenny Gruber in victory lane on Saturday night

after winning the 30-lap NASCAR Modified Winston Fan

Appreciation Night feature race at Grandview Speedway. It was

the first win for the Reading racer and his Mel-Dor

Motel/Herb's Auto Tag Modified, since July, 1996.

In the companion 20-lapper for NASCAR Late Models Randy

Stoudt of Pottstown was able to wheel his Hutt's Glass/Stoudt

Signs entry to victory for his third win of the season.

1998 Keystone Legends Tour Champion Kevin Welsh of Far

Hills, NJ drove to victory in the 15-lap Legends Cars race.

This was the only appearance of the season for Legends at the

Grandview Speedway.

Terry Meitzler, after finishing in second spot for a

couple of seasons, was able to wrap up the NASCAR Modified

stock car championship at Grandview Speedway on Saturday

night. By virtue of his 10th place finish in the modified

feature the Kutztown, PA racer was able to tally up 4993

points putting the championship out of reach of any other

modified racer.....even if Meitzler went on vacation for the

last two weeks of the season.

In the late model division Dean Stoudt, East Greenville,

sits on top of the standings with two nights of point racing

to go. Stoudt, a former champion, has 5072 points compared to

Rick Todorow who has 4970 points and Jeff Teets has 4944

counters. They are the only three drivers with a chance at the title.

When the green dropped for the NASCAR Modifieds Jack

Hartnett was in front of the pack with Dave Faust and Cliff

Quinn giving him quite a challenge for the top spot. Kenny

Gruber worked his way through the field to be a challenger by

the 10th lap and at the 15th lap Hartnett and Gruber were

chasing the top spot, side by side. On the next circuit

Gruber was in front of the pack and that is where he stayed

for the balance of the 30-lap event.

However Gruber did have plenty of competition as Jon

Kellner, Kenny Gilmore and seven feature winner Tom Mayberry

were there to challenge. At the finish Gruber got the win and

$2,200 while just a few feet behind was Jon Kellner

(Lansdale). In third was Kenny Gilmore (Fleetwood) followed

by Tom Mayberry (Sellersville) and Rick Schaffer (Woxall).

The 20-lapper for late models had Kyle Pensinger, in

front, still looking for his elusive first win. Junior Grebe

challenged Pennsinger at the midway point and took command on

the tenth lap. Randy Stoudt got into the picture on the 16th

lap with Stoudt and Grebe running side-by-side. Stoudt took

the top spot and went on to win his third of the season.

Junior Grebe (Boyertown) finished a strong second. Third spot

went to Kyle Pensinger (Lyons) followed by Dean Stoudt (Green

Lane) and Sam Schlosberg.

The Legends cars showed up 48 strong and Mike Burrell

looked as if he was going to gather up a win in the 15 lap

feature. The Coplay racer set the pace in the early laps.

However it was Kevin Welsh taking command about one third

through the feature and he was able to hold off all

challengers to win the feature race. Second spot went to

Brian Levan (Fleetwood) followed by Mike Burrell, Blane

Gundrum and Travis Dillman.

Qualifying events for the NASCAR Modifieds went to Jack

Hartnett, Ray Swinehart, Kerry Kratz, Kevin Hartnett and Rick

Schaffer. The consolation races were won by Rich Wisdo, Ken

Lindaberry and Danny Erb. The Automotive Machining Services

Cash Dash, worth $380, went to Ray Swinehart.

Late model qualifiers went to Randy Stoudt, John Durling

and Sam Schlosberg while Dean Stoudt won the consolation. In

the Quigley Motors Cash Dash the victory went to John Durling.

In the qualifiers for Legends, Kevin Welsh, Ray Scigowski

and Travis Dillman were winners while the consolation race

went to last year's feature winner Zach Dunkelberger.

GOOD NEWS-BAD NEWS DEPARTMENT: Jim Bagley, who suffered a

heart attack at the track two months back, was back in action

with the modifieds. Hal Renninger, a veteran campaigner,

suffered some heart problems in the pit area. He was

transported to a local hospital in Allentown, PA and had

surgery during Saturday night. His main artery was 99%

blocked. He could be released early in the week. Cards will

reach him at 146 Harrison St., Emmaus, PA 18049. The 51-year

old racer is expected to make a total recovery.

season, with all youngsters under the age of 12 being

admitted free. "This has really proved to be a successful

promotion. Family Night has gotten the kids to bring the

parents out for a night of exciting stock car racing at

Grandview Speedway," said Rogers. The NASCAR Late Model stock

cars will get to run in a Quigley Dodge Cash Dash.

The Grand-daddy of short track extravaganzas comes to

Grandview Speedway on Saturday, September 11. With $20,000
