HOT NIGHT GOOD FOR MAYBERRY AND TRIMBUR AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 31, 1999 . . . The heat, close to 100
degrees, did not seem to bother Tom Mayberry as he drove the
A&T Chevrolet/Golden Corral sponsored Mike Kelly owned entry
to victory in the 30-lap Exide Batteries NASCAR Winston
Racing Series feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday
night. The win was his sixth of the season.
"Whenever you come from back in the pack (started 17th in
the 28 car field), it is always a good night. It doesn't
matter how hot it gets. Things opened up well for us. It was
not easy but Mike Kelly and the crew gave me a good car,"
said Mayberry in victory lane. "I want to thank Exide
Batteries for sponsoring the night and thank the fans for
coming out. It looks like a good crowd."
Mayberry pointed out that he wants to win next Saturday,
August 7, when there will be $10,000 up for grabs for the
running of the Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth Cummins
Forrest Rogers Memorial 50-lap Modified Championship. "That
is one of two we really want to win this season. The other is
the $20,000 to win THP Freedom 76'er set for September 11."
In the 20-lap NASCAR Late Model feature race Ed Trimbur,
a former drag racer turned oval track racer, won his first
feature in his rookie season of competition. Trimbur was
wheeling his own Extreme Motorsports Painting sponsored entry.
Ron Haring put his mount in front of the pack early and
before the first lap was over, Jeff Strunk, one of the top
point chasers on the circuit was eliminated when he and Rich
Wisdo tangled in the first turn. On the restart Haring
resumed command and clearly looked like it was going to take
some extra effort by the challengers to get by him.
At 10 laps it was Haring and Chip Slocum battling, side
by side, with Haring able to keep the number on position.
And on the 17th lap Haring got wide in the fourth turn, Tom
Mayberry and Slocum got by him, only to have Haring power
back in front. On the 20th lap, after a restart due to a
caution, Mayberry was able to power his way to the first
between one and two, Haring got high, and the veteran
performer was able to hold off challenges from Chip Slocum to
win his sixth of the season worth $2200. Second spent went to
Slocum (Ewing Township, NJ) followed by current NASCAR Track
Modified point leader Terry Meitzler (Kutztown). Ron Haring
(Allentown) held on for fourth while Donny Erb
(Douglassville) had a strong finish for fifth.
The 20-lap Exide Batteries Late Model feature had Kyle
Pensinger in front for the first four laps searching for his
first win. At the four lap marker Ed Trimbur moved his entry
in front of the pack and showed the talents of a veteran to
hold off challenges from multi time champions John Giesler,
Dean Stoudt and former champion Lou Egrie to win his first
career victory in his rookie season of competition. In fact
Trimbur was even able to hold off challenges from five
feature winner Jeff Teets. Second spot went to Dean Stoudt
(East Greenville) followed by Jeff Teets (Coplay), Junior
Grebe (Boyertown) and Lou Egrie (Philadelphia).
Qualifying heat races for the NASCAR Winston Racing
Series Modifieds went to Danny Erb, Cliff Quinn, Terry
Meitzler and Jeff Strunk. The consolation races went to
Smokey Warren and Jon Kellner. The Automotive Machining
Services Cash Dash was won by Terry Meitzler earning him $350.
In the Late Model preliminaries wins went to Ed Trimbur,
Casey Ebright and John Durling while the consolation was won
by Ron Chrisman.
Bill Gensler earned the Kochel Equipment First Alternate
Cash Award for the modifieds. And unofficially there was a
tie for the Timber Wolf Smokeless Tobacco Hard Charger Award
worth $200. Mayberry came from 17th to finish first and Rick
Schaffer came from 24th to finish 8th. Each gained 16 spots
in the feature event.
