RANDY STOUDT WINS FIRECRACKER 40 FOR LATE MODELS WHILE RICK
SCHAFFER TAKES WIN IN MODIFIED FEATURE AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 3, 1999 . . . The most sought after
victory in NASCAR Late Model stock car racing at Grandview
Speedway is a win in the rich Firecracker 40. Randy Stoudt,
who struggled in the early part of the season, wheeled his
Stoudt Signs/Hutt Glass sponsored entry to victory in the
annual classic on Saturday night at the Bechtelsville, PA
oval. It was his second win of the season. And in the
companion 30-lapper for the NASCAR Modifieds Rick Schaffer
moved closer to becoming the all time leading modified
feature winner at Grandview Speedway. The Woxall, PA racer
put the Inquirer sponsored entry in victory lane to pick up
the $2,200 first place money.
Mike Bedell, an impressive newcomer to the late model
ranks, set the pace for seven laps in the Firecracker 40
before Pottstown racing talent Randy Stoudt took control of
things from 4th starting position. Once in front Stoudt was
able to hold on to the top spot for the remainder of the
race. Junior Grebe gave Stoudt a tussle for the top spot up
to the midway point. John Durling and Grebe battled for
second spot with Grebe spinning and Durling getting control
of second. On the 30th lap Durling along with Ed Hoffman and
Ron Chrisman tangled putting all three to the back of the
pack. On the restart Rick Todorow (Quakertown) locked in a
tight battle with Dean Stoudt for the late model title, was in
second and gave Randy Stoudt quite a challenge for the win
but had to settle for second place.
Third place went to Dean Stoudt (East Greenville) as he
holds a very narrow margin in the chase for the championship.
Fourth place was earned by Jeff Teets (Coplay) followed by
Casey Ebright (Pottstown).
The 30-lap feature for NASCAR Modifieds saw Rich Wisdo in
front of the pack at the drop of the green by veteran starter
Bruce Harmony. Wisdo stayed in front for the first five laps
with Kenny Gilmore working his way up from 6th to take the
top position. At the ten lap marker Rick Schaffer, coming
from ninth starting position, charged to the front of the 28
car starting field. Once in front the race turned into a duel
between Schaffer, Gilmore with Dennis Bailey sticking his
nose into things.
Jeff Strunk, second in the standings at Grandview with
the modifieds and on top in the Motor Truck Equipment Co.
Cummins/Kenworth PA NASCAR Modified Championship Series, was
making a charge to the front when a flat tire sidelined him
on the 12th lap while running fifth.
At the finish Schaffer, closing in on Fred Rahmer's all
time mark for modified wins at Grandview, took the top spot
with Kenny Gilmore (Fleetwood) finishing second. In third was
Dennis Bailey (Kutztown) followed by Kevin Hartnett
(Perkasie) and current NASCAR Modified point leader Terry
Meitzler.
Meitzler, unofficially, earned the Timber Wolf Smokeless
Tobacco Hard Charger Award for the modifieds coming 21st
starting spot to finish 5th. That effort will be worth $200
extra.
Qualifying heats for the NASCAR Modifieds were earned by
Rick Schaffer, Kevin Hartnett, Rich Wisdo and Tom Mayberry.
The consolation wins went to Terry Meitzler and Tracy
Readinger.
In NASCAR Late Model preliminaries the victories were
earned by Jeff Teets, Randy Stoudt and Dean Stoudt while the
consolation went to Scott Miley.
The Quigley Dodge Cash Dash for Modifieds went to Tom
Mayberry and the Kochel Equipment Cash Dash for Late Models
went to Dean Stoudt.
An exciting fireworks display, drawing rave reviews from
the fans, was the conclusion of the Firecracker 40 NASCAR
stock car racing night.
