POINT LEADER TERRY MEITZLER WINS FIRST OF THE SEASON,
SENNOTT TOPS THE LATE MODEL FIELD FOR THE SECOND TIME
Bechtelsville, PA June 26, 1999 . . . "Always in the chase
for the crown but I have never claimed it. Hopefully this is
the season we do it," said Terry Meitzler after wheeling the
Meitzler Excavating modified to victory on Saturday night at
Grandview Speedway. The current NASCAR Modified track point
leader who calls Kutztown home earned $2520 winning the 30-
lap O'Connor Truck Centers NASCAR Modified feature race and
the 3-lap Cash Dash. It was the first win of the season for
Meitzler and increased his point lead in the chase for the
NASCAR Modified point crown at Grandview Speedway.
In the 20-lapper for NASCAR Shortrack Late Models Chuck
Sennott, a transplanted New York State racer, now calling
Gilbertsville, PA home, drove the Kochel Equipment sponsored
entry to his second win of the season.
And for fans of modified racer Jim Bagley, who suffered a
heart attack at the track on June 19, there is very good
news. Bagley is at home (1320 W. Welsh Road, North Wales, PA
19454) and recovering. He is planning to be back racing
NASCAR Modifieds at Grandview in about one month. "It will
give us a chance to regroup. We need to be doing more with
the car to be competitive. There is some very tough
competition at Grandview Speedway and we want to be back in
the thick of it all. We need to make some changes and this
will give us some time to do that. I do really appreciate all
the mail, the calls and the concern shown by fans, racers and
the media for me. THANK YOU," said the veteran modified racer
who stands out from the pack because he chooses to race
without sponsorship support.
In the 30-lapper for NASCAR Modifieds Jack Hartnett had
his Friendly Market sponsored machine in front for several
laps even surviving a ten car accident on the 6th lap. At the
10 lap marker Junior Mikosz got by and set the pace until the
22nd lap when a flat tire sent him to the pits while leading.
Just one lap earlier Jeff Strunk had gone to the pits while
challenging Mikosz for the lead. He also had a flat tire. And
while all this was happening Doug Pannepacker was sent to the
pits by officials for a "rule infraction." Pannepacker had
been running with the leaders.
With Mikosz gone and Jeff Strunk at the back of the pack,
Ed Aikin had the T&C Hobbies entry in front but not for long.
Meitzler, who had been running third, scooted up to first in
the second turn and was the leader. Meitzler was able to hold
off some very strong challenges from Kevin Hartnett, in fact
the challenger edged in front of the leader a couple of times
in the final laps only to be rebuffed. At the finish Meitzler
was just a scant margin in front of Hartnett and his
Candyland Express mount. Hartnett (Perkasie) took home second
place money followed by Chip Slocum (Ewing Township, NJ),
Jeff Strunk (Bethel, PA) and Ed Aikin (Broomall).
Kerry Kratz earned the Timber Wolf Smokeless Tobacco Hard
Charger Award coming from 28th to finish 9th. That earns
Kratz an extra $200. Todd Heydt got the Kochel Equipment
First Alternate Cash just missing the feature lineup.
Kyle Pensinger was the man to beat in the 20-lap late
model feature, at least for 10 laps. On the start of the 11th
lap, in turn two, Pensinger spun his Haldeman Ford sponsored
entry giving the lead to second place Chuck Sennott. Once in
front Sennott was able to take full control and lead former
champion Lou Egrie to the checkered flag being displayed by
veteran starter Bruce Harmony. Egrie (Philadelphia) got
credit for second followed by John Durling (Reading), multi
time champion Dean Stoudt (East Greenville) and Mike Bedell (Pottstown).
Qualifying heat races for the NASCAR Modifieds were won
by Smokey Warren, Terry Meitzler, Doug Pannepacker (Mopar
powered) and Rich Wisdo. The consolation races were taken by
Chip Slocum and Sam Schoenly while Terry Meitzler also earned
$420 by winning the Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash.
In the late model division the qualifying event wins
were taken by John Durling, Ron Chrisman and Junior Grebe.
The consolation race went to three time champion John Giesler.
