SLOCUM AND RANDY STOUDT EACH WIN THIRD OF THE SEASON AT GRANDVIEW
BECHTELSVILLE, PA AUGUST 15, 1998 . . . Close finishes....in fact very close
finishes, are getting to be the norm at Grandview Speedway and Saturday night
was no different. Chip Slocum had to use all his skills to first get by Jim
Bagley to take the lead and then spent the rest of the 30-lap NASCAR Winston
Racing Series Modified feature race holding off challenges from Bagley and Jon
Kellner to claim his third win of the season. And in the 20 lap feature for
NASCAR Winston Short Track Racing Series Late Models there was a stout battle
for the win between eventual winner Randy Stoudt and former champion Dean
Stoudt. They are not related.
29 modifieds took the green flag in the 30-lap modified feature race with Jim
Bagley, an independent type of guy who chooses to race without sponsorship,
getting the lead. And it was Bagley setting the pace for 18 laps, holding off
challenges from Sam Martz, Slocum and Kellner. Slocum put the Giels Automotive
sponsored entry in front on the 19th lap only to have Bagley take the lead
back on the next lap. At the 21-lap marker Slocum was back in front with
Bagley and Kellner right on his rear bumper. And that was they finished as
Slocum, a bowling alley and tavern operator from Ewing Township, NJ, was able
pick up $2200 for his winning efforts while Bagley and Kellner battled for
second and put heavy pressure on the winner for the top spot. Jim Bagley,
from Lansdale, finished second for his best effort of the season. In third was
Jon Kellner (Lansdale) followed by current point leader Ray Swinehart
(Bechtelsville) and Cliff Quinn (Coopersburg).
The 20-lap feature for late model stock cars had 26 cars taking the green and
Mike Bedell in front at the start. Roger Decker and his "Prisoners of
War/Missing in Action #8" took the top when Bedell went to the infield on the
second lap. Randy Stoudt moved to the front on the fourth lap after a two lap
battle with Decker. And it was the Stoudt and Stoudt show for the final 15
laps with Randy Stoudt in front and Dean Stoudt right on his rear bumper. Rick
Todorow made a run for the top spot in the closing laps but when the green
flag fell it was Randy Stoudt (Pottstown), in the Hutt's Glass/Stoudt Signs
entry, claiming his third $600 winner's check of the season. Dean Stoudt,
East Greenville, got a strong second place finish. Rick Todorow, Quakertown,
earned third followed by Terry Snyder (Green Lane) and Jeff Teets (Coplay).
Current late model point leader Chuck Schutz finished sixth to hold on to his
narrow point leader over Randy Stoudt.
Qualifying heat wins for the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modifieds went to
Ron Haring, Donny Erb, Sam Martz, Ray Swinehart and Randy Bailey. Consolation
races were won by Rick Schaffer, Junior Mikosz and Dennis Bailey. And it was
Donny Erb getting $340 for his win in the Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash.
In the late models Randy Stoudt, Bill Henning and Mark Kropp were tops in the
qualifying heat races while Sam Schlosberg won the consolation race. The
Quigley Dodge Cash Dash went to Randy Stoudt.
With just three weeks remaining in the chase for the lucrative point titles at
Grandview Speedway, Ray Swinehart of Bechtelsville, sits on top of the NASCAR
Winston Racing Series Modified standings with 4483 points. Second spot is
held by Terry Meitzler, Kutztown, 4141 counters. Kerry Kratz of Bechtelsville
is third with 4110. Glenn Strunk, Boyertown, holds on to fourth with 3927 and
in fifth is Rick Schaffer of Woxall, PA with 3734.
In the NASCAR Winston Short Track Racing Series Late Models Chuck Schutz,
Pottstown, holds a slim lead over Randy Stoudt, Pottstown, 4443 to 4385.
Former champion Dean Stoudt, East Greenville, has 4348. John Giesler, Aston,
