SCHAFFER WINS $10,000 FORREST ROGERS MEMORIAL MODIFIED RACE.... JEFF TEETS
WINS THIRD OF THE SEASON IN LATE MODELS
BECHTELSVILLE, PA AUGUST 8, 1998 . . . “We need the money. I didn’t think we
had a chance. That caution with five laps to go changed things for us. I want
to thank God and Arlan Schaeffer (owner of Schaeffer’s Family Restaurant and a
long time Schaffer supporter) and all my sponsors. We couldn’t have done it
without them,” said Rick Schaffer after winning the Forrest Rogers Memorial
40-lap championship race for NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modifieds at
Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. The victory gave the Woxall, PA racer a
$10,800 pay day, the biggest of his long career. The largest crowd of the
season for a Saturday night stock car race was on hand to see Schaffer win the
28th annual Forrest Rogers Memorial for the first time.
In the 20-lap NASCAR Late Model feature race Jeff Teets was able to bring his
Harry’s U-Pull It Auto Parts entry home first for the third time this season.
Ron Haring, an early season feature winner, came from third to grab the lead
on the first lap of the 40-lap Forrest Rogers Memorial (run in memory of the
founder and builder of the speedway). Haring set the pace for 32 laps. Chip
Slocum and Tom Mayberry put some tremendous pressure on the leader for many
laps with Slocum and Mayberry running side-by-side right on Haring’s rear
bumper. At the 19 lap marker an 11 car wreck eliminated seven starters.
With Mayberry now in second spot, Haring seemed to have settled in as the
leader and no one looked strong enough to catch him. However at the 32 lap
mark Haring went into turn two, Mayberry was challenging low, and did a slow
spin that seemed to take Mayberry with him. Haring was able to continue at the
back of the pack and Mayberry went to the pits, out of the race.
Slocum got the lead on the restart but Rick Schaffer was quick to put the C&C
Ford/Al Hamilton GMC Trucks sponsored entry in front of the pack. Two laps
later Slocum did a slow roll in turn three eliminating himself from the chase
for the victory. For the final five laps current point leader Ray Swinehart
chased Schaffer to the finish line but fell short of victory by a narrow
margin as Schaffer took the win, his third of the season. Swinehart
(Boyertown) earned second followed by Kenny Gruber (Reading), Dave Faust
(Boyertown) and Kevin Hartnett (Perkasie). Terry Meitzler, chasing Swinehart
for the point title, was involved in a midrace accident and worked his way
from the back of the field to seventh place at the finish.
Schaffer was also able to win his heat race, the Automotive Machining Services
Cash Dash worth $435 and the Cheers Tavern Clean Sweep Award (for winning his
heat, dash and feature) which was worth $325.
In the 20-lap feature for NASCAR Late Models Jimmy Meitzler Jr. was in front
at the start and lead the first two laps with Jeff Teets getting the top spot
at the three lap mark. Once in front Teets made it look somewhat easy as he
drove to his third win of the season. John Durling and Dean Stoudt came from
far back in the starting field to challenge the leader at the finish but their
efforts fell short. Durling (Reading) took second while former champion Dean
Stout (East Greenville) took third. In fourth spot was Jimmy Meitzler, Jr.
(Barto) and Terry Snyder (Green Lane) grabbed fifth.
Qualifying heat races for the late models were won by Ron Chrisman, Jeff Teets
and Mark “The Baker” Kropp. Chuck Schutz, current late model point leader, won
the consolation race.
NASCAR Modified heat victories went to Donny Erb, Ron Haring, Rick Schaffer,
John Willman, and Randy Bailey. The consolation races were taken by Ken
Lindaberry, Glenn Strunk and Mike Bailey. Rick Schaffer won the Automotive
Machining Services Cash Dash worth $435.
Latest point standings in the chase for the track championships show Chuck
Schutz of Pottstown still on top in the late models with 4188. Second spot is
held by Randy Stoudt, Pottstown, 4075 points. In third is former champion Dean
Stoudt of East Greenville, 4049. Another former champion, John Giesler, is
fourth with 3649 and in fifth is Junior Grebe, Boyertown, 3619.
Ray Swinehart of Bechtelsville, a former track champion, leads the modified
standings with 4203 points. Terry Meitzler, Kutztown, is in the chase with
3986 good for second spot. Kerry Kratz, Bechtelsville, holds down third with
3912 followed by Glenn Strunk, Boyertown, 3689 and Rick Schaffer, Woxall, 3519.
