FULL MOON MADNESS POPS UP AT CANANDAIGUA; PAINE EARNS SECOND STRAIGHT CANANDAIGUA FEATURE WIN
CANANDAIGUA, NY...Steve Paine picked up his second straight feature win last Saturday at the Canandaigua Speedway winning the Payne Building and Construction 35. Bob Henry Jr. took top honors in the 20-lap DIRT Sportsman main event. It was Henry's first feature win at Canandaigua. "Big" Mike Cooper came home the victor in the 20-lap Pro-stock feature, while James Henry easily won the time shortened Street Stock feature.
John Ventura was to have held the pole in the Modified feature, however he had to switch cars and start at the rear of the field. This put Dave Axton on the pole with Scott Ridley on outside pole. Axton quickly took the lead and held off Chuck Hebing. Hebing pressured Axton and on lap four the "Cobra" took the lead.
On lap 12 Paine took the top spot and never looked back, turning laps nearly a second faster then the competition. A real battle for the runner up spot developed between Tim McCreadie, Billy Decker and Danny Johnson. At times these three raced nearly side-by-side, three-wide.
Paine came home first, winning by nearly four seconds over McCreadie, Johnson, Decker and Tim Fuller. The AMB Transponder system was used in the modified division for the first time with great success.
The 20-lap sportsman got off to a ragged start as Scott Joy was helped around on the front stretch coming down to take the green. On the restart Wade Czymmek took the lead followed by Dan Wiesner, Bob Henry Jr., and Clay Parmelee. Henry was able to pass Czymmek exiting the second turn on lap four for the lead. At about this same time Parmelee realized the quality of the upper grove on the track. He went high and passed both Wiener and Czymmek for second exiting turn four.
Parmelee continued to use the high line around the speedway and finally passed Henry for the lead on lap nine, as Henry became trapped behind the lapped car of newcomer Walt Chyrywaty. Henry bounced back almost immediately retaking the lead on lap 11 after trapping Parmelee behind the lapped car of Mike Majors. Parmelee made one last effort, passing Henry on lap 15, only to quickly lose the position back to Henry the next lap. On the move now were Karl Comfort and Just Haers. Comfort took second on lap 16 and fell behind Haers one lap later.
Henry Jr. squeaked out his first ever Canandaigua feature win to the delight of the crowd. Haers and Comfort came home in second and third followed by Rick VanNeil and Parmelee. The 20-lap Pro-stock feature was riddled with yellows and even a red flag. Mike Cooper, who lives across the street from the speedway, took command at the drop of the green and would lead all 20 laps. On lap four the red flag flew when Zack Shove flipped over exiting the fourth turn. Also involved to a degree in the accident were Jason Boyle and Patrick Hobbs. There were no injuries.
The restart saw Cooper leading Tiger Chapman, Lee Burnett and Scott Fremouw. The yellow flew on lap seven to setup five continuous yellow flag laps. On lap seven Dave Conant looped his car in the fourth turn. Lap eight saw Tom Jansch spin also in turn four. On lap nine as the runner up, Chapman, spun in the second turn, both Jipp Ortiz and Fremouw made contact with the backstretch wall. Points leader Ortiz was finished for the night. On lap 10, it was Derrick Excell looping out in the first turn. The scariest incident of the night came on the lap 11 when Hobbs was sent spinning into the pit area, down the pit access road off turn three. At the same time Jim McGuigan slammed hard into a competitor folding up the front end of his Monte Carlo. One more spin out on lap 12 took place and then the race would remain green.
Cooper came home the winner followed by Burnett, Jon Miller, Boyle and Fremouw. Both Boyle and Fremouw rebounded from earlier race accidents.
The 10-lap Street Stock feature had to be shortened to just seven laps five of the seven laps were run under caution. James Henry led the entire distance with John Rutkowski coming home a distant second. Richard Briggs, Randy Peters and Phil LaVare rounded out the top five.
A special four lap Empire Super Sprint Dash was run with Bubby Kerick taking the win. Rob Dietrich finished second followed by Lance Yonge.
The ESS cars will be on hand this Saturday, May 12. It will be the season tour opener for the sprint cars as the planned opener, earlier this year, was rained out. A full card of Modified, Sportsman, Pro-stock and Street Stocks round out the five star program. Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
