DWYER BANKS 1ST WIN OF SEASON, SMITH DYNAMITE IN SPORTSMAN

August 11, 2001

West Lebanon, N.Y.-Tim Dwyer captured his first modified victory of the season Saturday night at Lebanon Valley. Hawley Smith also visited victory lane for the first time this year in the sportsman division. Bob Duzlak took top honors in the 20-lap Pro Stock Feature. BERKSHIRE BANK, T-N-T SALES & AGWAY were the night’s primary sponsors.

Hector Stratton was the early race leader in the 30-lap modified feature. The only caution of the race came on lap four when two cars got together in turn two. Tim Dwyer started the race in sixth and moved up to third on the lap four restart. Right behind Dwyer there was a three-wide battle for fifth between Eddie Marshall, Ronnie Johnson and Guy Sheldon. Dwyer moved into second on lap five and set his sights on Stratton. Dwyer caught Stratton by lap eight and made the pass for the lead coming off turn two on lap ten. Marshall took over fourth just before the halfway point of the race. At the halfway point it was Dwyer, Stratton, Ricci, Marshall and Rob Pitcher.

Ricci made his way around Stratton for the runner-up spot on lap 17. Dwyer was setting a blistering pace and led by a full straightaway with eight laps remaining. The only thing that slowed Dwyer down was the lapped traffic. No one had anything for Dwyer on this night and his easily cruised home to his first victory of the 2001 season. Ricci, Stratton, Marshall and Johnson rounded out the top five.

Ed Harkins led the first twelve laps of the sportsman feature. Hawley Smith started the race in eighth and was all the way up to second by lap six. Sparky Lowe and Bobby Knipe came into the night tied for first in the point standings. The two drivers put on a great show coming from fourteenth and fifteenth and were battling for fifth by lap eleven. Smith made the pass for the lead going down the backstretch on lap 12.The first caution of the race came on lap 15 when Jason Tompkins got a right rear flat tire.

Knipe and Lowe moved into third and fourth respectively on the restart. Tompkins brought out the caution once again when he spun around in turn three. Knipe won a three-wide battle for second on the restart, but ran out of time to catch Smith. Lowe got around Harkins for third on the final lap and K.C. Goewey would crack the top five at the finish.

The Pro Stock race got off to a bad start as six cars came together on the first lap. One car that was involved was Jim Lagenback, but he recovered nicely to finish third. Bob Duzlak took the lead from Danny Sanchez on the restart. The caution came out again on lap two as Ricky Duzlak lost a right rear tire. The top three had pulled away from the rest of the pack by the three-quarter mark of the race. Sanchez had closed back in on Duzlak in the final stages. The two drivers came together coming off turn four, but both continued on without losing any positions. Duzlak took the checkered flag for the third time this season.

The victory was worth four hundred dollars compliments of Augie’s Wholesale Cars.

The Pure Stocks ran the two feature races that were not completed last week. They were won by Ron Johnson and Pete Wiegand. This week Pure Stock races were won by Corey Sandstedt, Joe DiStefano, Jim Dellea and Rich Harkins. Dave Colwell and Jery Helms won the two rookie features.
