TREMONT & HEFFNER SPLIT MOD TWIN BILL LOWE & BLACKBURN ALSO VICTORIOUS

JULY 28, 2001

WEST LEBANON, NY - Kenny Tremont and J.R. Heffner split Twin 20’s in the modified division Saturday night. Sparky Lowe was victorious in the 20-lap sportsman main and Al Blackburn became the twelfth different winner in the pro stock division. Another great longtime Valley sponsor, Emerick Associates, brought us this great night of racing. Emerick Associates also gave money to the winner of every feature race run over the course of the night.

MODIFIED FEATURE-ACT I

David Sanchez and Denny Soltis led the field down for the start of the first 20-lap modified feature. Problems on lap three as Chris Moore got spun around in turn one. Six more cars were collected up in the incident with Moore. Donnie Corellis used the restart to get into second in the running order. John Hewitt took fourth from Mike Benson on lap eight. The very next lap Dave Mosher got turned around in turn two bringing out the final caution of the race. Corellis used the restart to take the lead from Sanchez. Kenny Tremont Jr had started the race in 16th, but was able to vault into sixth on the lap nine restart. Hector Stratton and Dickie Larkin both went pitside with mechanical problems at the halfway point of the race. Tremont made a bold move from fifth to third on lap eleven. Eddie Marshall had another top five performance going as he sat fourth on lap eleven. Tremont took second away from Sanchez on lap 14. Marshall bumped Sanchez back one more spot on lap 16.

Tremont was closing in on Corellis as the race neared completion. A large group of lapped car loomed in front of the leaders as they took the two-to-go sign from starter Matt Higgins. The lapped cars made contact and slowed dramatically in turn two on the final lap. Corellis went high and Tremont went low to get around the slower cars. Going into turn three the two were side by side. Tremont was able to pull ahead to take the victory over Corellis. Eddie Marshall finished third. David Sanchez had a very strong fourth place finish and John Hewitt rounded out the top five. It was Tremont’s 95th modified victory at the Valley and his 200th overall career victory.

MODIFIED FEATURE-ACT II

The top fifteen cars from the first feature were handicapped according to the normal procedures by money won the last three weeks. Mike Benson held the lead for a brief period until J.R. Heffner took it away on lap two. Moore was looking like a contender early as he moved into fifth on lap four. The first of two caution flags in the race came on lap seven as Lucas Baker and John Tucker sat the wrong way in turn two. Matt Quinn was able to make his way around Sanchez for fourth on lap 12. Tremont was looking for his second win of the night as he cracked the top five on lap 12. Moore started to apply pressure on Benson on lap 13 and was able to make the pass on lap 15.

Heffner began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 14, but did not play a factor like it did in the first race. Tremont was able to move into third on lap seventeen. Chip Mitchell got turned around in turn two on lap 19 which set the stage for a one-lap shoot-out. Heffner was able to motor away on the restart and take his first victory of the season. Moore finished second with Tremont third. Benson had a solid fourth place finish and Quinn rounded out the top five.

Ed Harkins led the first nine laps of the 20-lap sportsman feature. He would lose the lead to Sparky Lowe on a lap nine restart. Roy Bridge and K.C. Goewey made contact going down the frontstretch on the second lap of the event. It was a testament to both drivers racing ability that they keep their cars pointed in the right direction and no caution was needed. Bridge had the best recover of the two as he finished the race in second position. Bobby Knipe came into the race as the point leader and was looking to stay on the top of the standings. He cracked the top five on lap 11and would make it up to third by the end of the race.

Art Collins had to use a provisional starting spot to get into the feature and started dead last. Collins made his way steadily through the field and wound up finishing seventh. Lowe was able to capture his third win of the season. John Scarborough finished fourth and Jay Casey rounded out the top five.

Nick Rogers led the first two laps of the 20-lap pro stock feature. The first caution of the race came on lap two for a multi-car incident in turn two. Something went awry on Rogers’s cars and he went pitside under the caution. Al Blackburn inherited the lead in all the commotion and guarded it with his life. Dan Burl moved into second on the restart and would challenge Blackburn the rest of the way. Ed Bachand and Paul LaRochelle were racing hard for third when they made contact going down the backstretch. Both were able to continue on and finished eighth and ninth.

Burl tried every way possible to get around Blackburn but could never get a solid run on him. Robbie Speed was in the mix as right on Burl’s back bumper. The three ran nose to tail for the second half of the race. Everyone raced clean and Blackburn was able to take his first victory of the season. Tom Brandt followed up his victory last week with a fourth place finish this week and Ray Hall Sr. rounded out the top five.

Scott Kilmer picked up the victory in the rookie pro stock feature. Pure stock winners included Ryan Larkin, Ron Tritschler, Brian Sandstedt and Kevin Dolan. Larkin is the son of modified driver, Dickie Larkin and it was his first career victory.
