BOWER AND PLUMB EACH WIN THEIR SECOND OF THE SEASON AT CAYUGA COUNTY
WEEDSPORT, NY...Chuck Bower from Lansing, NY won his second DIRT Modified feature of the year at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway last Sunday. John Plumb also won his second DIRT Sportsman main event. Troy VanAllen finally broke the win record of Tony Buffa's at Cayuga County in the special ESDCA Dwarf Car feature. Joe Reeves won the 40-lap Pit Stop Convenience Stores Enduro.
Bower jumped from his front row starting spot to break into the lead at the drop of the green flag. He then began to build a substantial lead over second place David Axton. By lap nine, Bower's lead was nearly a full straight away. But now his lead was over A.J. Romano and not Axton, as Romano had taken second on lap 10.
Romano tried to close the gap between himself and Bower. By lap 20 he wad closed the gap to just over a second between himself and the leader. Tim Fuller battled with Axton to take third and then found himself trying to hold off Gary Tomkins. On lap 30 Tomkins made the move to take third from Fuller. In the end it was Bower by .741 seconds over Romano.
Rounding out the top five were Tomkins, Danny Johnson and Tim Fuller. Bower averaged 72.139 mph in the race that went green-to- checkers.
The 20-lap DIRT Sportsman main event saw Gary Gallerie take the lead at the start of the race followed by Ryan Richardson, John Plumb, John Juhl and Justin Haers.
The first yellow flew on lap four when rookie Don Burke looped out in the first turn. He quickly restarted and returned at the back of the field. John Plumb took over in the front of the field on lap six. The yellow flew for a second time on lap eight when Chris Ostrowsky hit the first turn wall. Ostrowsky had not been having very good luck with the concrete walls all night. Twice before he had encounters with the cement.
Plumb was now the leader with Bob Henry jr. running in second. Steve Gray and Jim Spano made up the third and fourth place runners, while Joe Beyea entered the top five on lap 11. Plumb now held nearly a ten car advantage over Henry Jr. The yellow flew for the third time when Terry Falter made contact with the first turn wall. During this yellow Beyea, running fifth had a right rear tire go flat. He exited to the pits where he eventually lost a lap as his crew struggled to complete their pitstop as quickly as possible.
Plumb took the victory followed by Henry Jr., Steve Gray, Spano and Justin Haers. Plumb's margin of victory was just 1.191 seconds.
The Dwarf Cars readied themselves for a 15-lap feature. Pole sitter Troy VanAllen blasted into the lead at the drop of the green. With Ken Gamlin a distant second, VanAllen was trying to build a substantial lead as he knew eventually multi-time feature winner Tony Buffa would not be far behind.
On lap 10 the yellow flew when Buffa, who had worked his way up to third, looped his mount in the first turn. This placed Buffa at the rear with just five laps remaining.
VanAllen won the event by nearly five car lengths over Barry Virts, Ken Gamlin, Frankie Doll and Tony Buffa, who started at the rear and finished in the Top Five.
This Sunday a special fare will be on tap at Cayuga County with the big blocks off to Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, PA, for the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series. A 50-lap Sunoco Race Fuels/Aplus Mini-markets qualifier will be run with the first small block earning a guaranteed starting spot at Syracuse during Super DIRT Week XXX, Saturday, October 6. Also on the race card will be a complete program of DIRT Sportsman and Pit Stop Convenience Stores Enduro action. Add to that the powerful Pro- Stocks will be returning. Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
