LARKIN WINS HISTORIC DOUBLE IN MODS AND 358-MODS, QUINN WINS 2ND MOD MAIN
JUNE 09, 2001
WEST LEBANON, NY- A very full card of racing greeted the race fans at Lebanon Valley Saturday night. Four postponed features from last week’s program were run first with the regularly scheduled events to follow. Dickie Larkin won the first 30-lap modified feature. Matt Quinn was able to capture the second 30-lap modified feature. The 358-modifieds made their first start of the 2001 season. Dickie Larkin picked up his second feature victory of the evening in that 24-lap feature. Sparky Lowe was victorious in the first 20-lap sportsman feature. Art Collins won the second sportsman feature of the evening. Danny Sanchez won the first 20-lap pro stock main with top honors in the second 20-lap pro stock feature going to Paul LaRochelle. TREMONT LUMBER and ZAPPALA BLOCK brought us this great night of action on the high banks.
John Alberti and Steve Devine brought the modified field down for the start of the first modified feature. Problems for Hector Stratton early in the race as he made hard contact with the turn four wall on lap two. Dickie Larkin used the restart to grab the lead away from Devine. Problems for Alberti on lap seven when contact was made with another car causing Alberti to come to a stop on the backstretch. Rich Ricci Jr had problems all race long. He nearly got turned around by another car on lap three, but did a masterful job of not spinning out. Ricci used the lap seven caution to make a trip to pit road. Ricci did return but would drop out by the halfway point with mechanical problems.
The biggest incident of the race came on lap eight as ten cars tangled going into turn one. Ricci, Mike King, Maynard Forrette and Matt Quinn were some of the cars involved in the melee. J.R. Heffner rocketed to second on the restart followed closely by Kenny Tremont Jr. in third. Eddie Marshall and Tremont swapped the third position back and forth on lap eleven. The top five at the halfway point was Larkin, Heffner, Tremont, Marshall and Rob Pitcher. Things looked to be settling down just past the halfway point as the top four cars pulled away from the rest of the pack.
Donnie Corellis and Jason Goff both saw their races end early end as they were sent to the pits on lap 21 for the actions on the track. Tremont applied the pressure on Heffner on a lap 21 restart and made the pass. A great three-way battle for the fifth position in the final stages of the race between Rob Pitcher, Ronnie Johnson and Tim Dwyer. Larkin could not be caught and he took home his first victory of the season. Tremont finished second, Heffner third, Marshall fourth and Dwyer won the battle for fifth spot.
Matt Quinn dropped the hammer on the start of the second modified feature and never lifted. Heffner won a three-wide battle for sixth on lap seven. Heffner was on a tear as he moved up to fourth by lap nine. Ronnie Johnson dropped from the event on lap nine and Hector Stratton followed suit the next lap. Heffner continued his forward motion taking third on lap eleven. Meanwhile Tremont and Ricci were making steady progress and sat eighth and ninth just before halfway. Guy Sheldon saw a top ten finish disappear as he went pitside on lap 13. Tremont moved from eight to fifth on lap 13. Quinn, Benson, Heffner, Devine and Tremont held the top five positions at the halfway point.
Lapped traffic started to come into play by lap 17, but did little to slow Quinn. Heffner and Benson raced side by side for second with ten laps to go. Heffner began to slowly make ground up on Quinn in the final laps. The only caution flag of the race came out on lap 25. This allowed Heffner to get right on the back bumper of the Overbaugh entry of Quinn. Quinn was able to get a good restart and held on to first. Heffner tried to hold off Tremont in the final two laps but Tremont made the pass for second on lap 29. Heffner settled for third with Dwyer fourth and Ricci fifth.
Dickie Larkin led the first lap of the 358-modified feature. Bud Christmann was able to grab the lead after a lap one restart. Christmann was able to hold the lead until Larkin took it back on lap nine. Christmann was battling a loose car and Rich Ricci Jr. was able to get around Christmann as well. At the halfway point it was Larkin, Ricci, Christmann, Todd Wilkinson and Mike Benson. The race for third heated up on lap 15 when Wilkinson and Chris Moore tried to pressure Christmann. Disaster for Christmann on lap 15 as he and Wilkinson came together on the frontstretch. Both cars would be done for the night.
Larkin was able to pull away on the restart and grab his second checkered flag of the night. It is the fourth time in his career that his has won both a modified and 358-modified feature in the same night. Ricci finished second, Moore third, J.R. Heffner fourth and Mike Benson fifth.
John Hotchkiss was the early race leader in the first 20-lap sportsman main. The caution flew on lap three as Danny Watson made contact with the turn two wall and could not get off the racing surface. Sparky Lowe started the race seventh, but took the lead on the ensuing restart. Art Collins was looking strong early and was up to third by lap four. Hawley Smith took over second on a lap five restart. Collins and Roy Bridge waged war for third during the middle of the race. Bridge finally made the pass on lap 17 leaving Collins to try and hold off a hard-charging Jeff Cassidy. Bridge was able to get around Smith on the last lap, but it was too late to try and run down race leader Lowe. Smith would finish third, Collins fourth and Cassidy rounding out the top five.
Ed Harkins held the lead for the first five laps in the sportsman nightcap. There was quite a bit of shuffling back through the pack but everyone kept going forward. Art Collins took the lead on lap five with Jeff Cassidy taking third. Hawley Smith grabbed second on a lap six restart. Bobby Knipe and Frank Harper made contact just before halfway and both drivers lost several positions. Collins, Smith, Cassidy, Bridge and Harkins were the top five at halfway.
Lowe cracked the top five for the first time on lap 11. Collins and Smith had pulled away from the rest of the field, but that lead evaporated with a caution on lap 15. K.C. Goewey had some problems early in the event, but rebounded to run in the top five by the end of the race. No one could catch Collins, but the race for second back to fifth was intense in the last two laps. It was the first win of the season for Collins. Smith, Bridge, Goewey and Lowe followed him across the line.
The first pro stock feature of the night started were it left off last week with four laps on the scoreboard. Danny Sanchez and Al Blackburn led the field down for the restart. Sanchez took the lead and never looked back. The caution flag flew three times on lap seven. Bob Duzlak tried to pressure Sanchez for the lead as early as lap 13. Sanchez was able to pull away a little, but lapped traffic allowed Duzlak to get right back on his bumper. Duzlak got one final restart with two laps remaining but Sanchez held off ever advance for the victory. Duzlak had to settle for second, Robbie Speed third, Al Blackburn fourth and Jim Langenback fifth.
The second pro stock feature paid four hundred dollars to win compliments of Beer Belly Bobs. Paul LaRochelle took the lead at the beginning of the race and never relinquished that position. Danny Sanchez was looking for another great run after a win in the first feature. He started tenth and was up to fifth by lap three. Problems for Robbie Speed caused him to drop from the race on lap three. Another driver on the move early was Bob Duzlak. He started the race 17th and was up to sixth by lap seven. Sanchez and Lagenback made contact in turn two on lap just before the halfway point. Both drivers continued without losing any positions.
Rob Yetman was running third at the halfway point. Problems began to arise and he quickly faded to the back of the field. Ricky Duzlak dropped from the event on lap 13. Only one caution came out on lap 14. This set up a six-lap shootout between LaRochelle, Lagenback and Bob Duzlak. They were three-wide for the lead at one point. With two laps to go Duzlak tried the high side around LaRochelle. The two made con tact and Duzlak dropped back to fourth. LaRochelle was able to hang on for the victory and the Beer Belly Bob bonus. Lagenback came in second, Sanchez third, Bob Duzlak fourth and George Stalker Jr. fifth.
The winner of the held over Pure Stock "D" race was Chris Streeter. Ron Hapeman won the Pure Stock "A" and Mark Forrest was also credited with the win due to a malfunctioning caution light. Bruce Pecorella won the Pure Stock "B" feature. Jay Martin was victorious in the Pure Stock "C" feature and Jeff Douglas won this week’s Pure Stock "D" feature. The winner of the Rookie feature was Henry Warner.
