MOORE WINS THIRD, TREMONT TAKES TENTH MODIFIED TITLE

SEPTEMBER 5, 1998

WEST LEBANON, NY-Chris Moore captured the 30-lap modified victory Saturday

night at Lebanon Valley. Chris Kokosa won the 20-lap sportsman feature and

Danny Sanchez won 20-lap street stock feature. Steve Hough won the IMCA

Modified main. Kenny Tremont took home the modified point title for the tenth

time. Art Collins was crowned the 1998 sportsman champion.

Mike Benson took the lead away from John Hancamp on lap two of the

30-lap modified feature. The yellow flag would fly on lap three for the first

of many cautions early in the event. Involved in the lap three incident

included Eddie Marshall, JR Heffner and John Hewitt. Hewitt was the only

driver not able to continue. Brett Hearn would take third on the lap three

restart. The yellow would fly again on lap four included in the melee was

Kenny Tremont. The incident would take Tremont out of contention to win the

event. Tremont would eventually recover to finish eighth.

Another caution would fly before lap four could be completed. Chris

Moore would gain the lead between the two restarts. Mike Benson and Brett

Hearn would race for the third position on lap five. The most serious

incident of the race occurred on lap five when Donnie Corellis flipped in

turn four. The car sustained heavy damage but Corellis was okay. Maynard

Forrette would move up to second on the restart. Meanwhile Benson and Hearn

continued to do battle for third on lap seven. Rich Ricci Jr would grab

fourth away from Hearn on lap ten. Hearn would slow considerably on lap 12

and would be done for the night on lap 28.

As the field crossed the stripe for halfway Moore had opened a

sizable advantage over Forrette, Benson, Ricci and Todd Wilkinson. Moore

would have a full straightaway advantage by lap 20. Ricci would take over

third on lap 20 and move into second on lap 26. Ricci would get two chances

to get by Moore in the final stages, but could not keep up with the front

running Moore. Moore would take home his fourth win of the 1998 season. Ricci

would take second, Forrette third, Benson fourth and Wilkinson fifth. Jack

Johnson would finish sixth in the feature.

Dave McFetters was the lap one leader of the 20-lap sportsman event,

but crashed in turn one on the first lap. Mike Boomhower was sent to the rear

for his role in the incident. Wes Powell would then inherit the lead, but

lose it to Lee Gagliardi on the restart. Chris Kokosa would take over third

place on a lap three restart and challenge for the lead on lap five. Kokosa

would take over the top spot on lap six. Gagliardi and KC Goewey would race

for second on lap seven. Goewey would take second on lap 12. Bobby Hackel

would take over third on lap 13.

Kokosa was well in command at the front. He was a full straightaway

ahead of Goewey by lap 14. Kokosa would encounter heavy traffic during the

middle portion of the race but never lost his huge lead. George Marcus would

take third from Hackel on lap 15, but the two would make contact the very

next lap sending both drivers hard into the wall. Hackel was finished for the

evening, but Marcus continued in the race. Two cautions in the final four

laps allowed Goewey to get right on the bumper of Kokosa, but Kokosa was able

to pull away both times. Kokosa would take home his fourth win of the year.

Goewey had a strong runner-up performance with Ron Blake third, Bobby

Chalmers fourth and Gagliardi fifth.

Steve Brownell led the first several laps of the 20-lap street stock

feature. Danny Sanchez had his sights set on the front early; he was fifth by

lap four and would take the lead by lap seven. Two caution flags would fly on

the eighth lap. Lorne Browe would grab fourth on the second restart. Scott

Goversten would drop out during a lap nine caution. Browe would take second

and Rob Yetman would grab fourth on the ensuing restart. Yetman would make

the pass for the third on lap eleven.

Sanchez, Browe and Yetman would pull away from the rest on the field

by lap 14. Invading driver, Bryan Peters, had a strong run in his first

outing at Lebanon Valley. He would take fifth by lap 15 and eventually finish

fourth. Sanchez would not be denied the victory and would pick up his fourth

win of the season. Browe finished second, Yetman third; Peters fourth and

Robbie Speed rounded out the top five.

Steve Hough won the 15-lap IMCA Modified feature. It was the second

win in a row for Hough in the IMCA Modifieds.

Next weekend will be the big Kings 200 Weekend at Lebanon Valley. The

action kicks off at 2:00 on Saturday and at 1:00 Sunday.
