RICH RICCI JR. ALMOST HOLDS OFF HEARN ON SAXTON SIGN NIGHT

WEST LEBANON, NY- Brett Hearn was the winner of the 30-lap modified
feature at Lebanon Valley Saturday night. Hawley Smith picked up the
20-lap sportsman main event and Robbie Speed won the Street Stock
feature. Saxton Sign was the night's main sponsor.
Maynard Forrette led the field down to the start of the 30-lap
modified feature. The field was forced to scramble early as Gary Waters
broke on the start of the event. Rich Ricci Jr. grabbed second on a lap
one restart. Ricci would battle Forrette for the top spot early on, but
could not make the pass stick. Kenny Tremont and Brett Hearn began to move
forward from the mid pack starting positions. They sat ninth and tenth
respectively on lap four. Donnie Corellis was on the charge early as well;
he took over the fifth spot on lap five.
Tremont would grab sixth on lap seven. Corellis would challenge Don
Ackner for fourth on lap eight; Corellis would take the spot on lap nine.
Tremont was up to fifth by lap nine. Dave Leckonby had a good run in the
feature; he was running third on lap 11. Hearn was up to seventh by lap 11.
Corellis would take third on a lap 12 restart and Tremont took fourth. Ricci
would take the front spot away from Forrette on lap 14. Forrette would see
his good run end on lap 15 as his racecar broke on a restart. Hearn would
move up to challenge Tremont for third on lap 17.
Ricci opened up a ten-car advantage by lap 19. Hearn would make the pass for
third on lap 20 and set sights on Corellis for second. Hearn would make the
pass for second on lap 23. Ricci and Hearn would pull away from the field in
the late stages of the event. Eddie Marshall and Chris Moore raced for
seventh on lap 27. Ricci began to encounter lapped traffic in the final two
laps. Hearn used a lapped car going into turn three on the final lap to make
the pass on Ricci and take home the checkered flag. Ricci held on for second,
Corellis third, Tremont fourth and Leckonby fifth.
Hawley Smith led ever lap of the 20-lap sportsman feature. Smith used his
front row starting spot to take the victory. K.C. Goewey was up to second by
lap two. Ron Blake and Chris Kokosa sat fourth and fifth on lap two. Bob
Hackel started deep on the grid, 25th; his worked his way up to ninth by lap
fourth. Kokosa took fourth on lap eight as Smith opened a twelve-car
advantage on the front.
The caution flag flew on lap 11. Kokosa would try to pass Tony
Laporta for third on the lap 11 restart. Good racing back in the top ten as
everyone was trying to improve their position. Kokosa would take third on
lap 18. George Marcus would take over sixth on the final lap. No one could
stop Smith as his crossed the stripe first. Goewey would come in second,
Kokosa third, Laporta fourth and Bobby Chalmers fifth.
Ray Hall was the early race leader in the 20-lap Street Stock
feature. Henry Tanner was on charge early moving up to sixth by lap three.
Robbie Speed would take the lead on lap six. Tanner was up to fourth by lap
seven. The field was slowed on lap eight for a caution. Tanner would take
second on the restart and Ricky Duzlak would take third on lap nine. The top
two would begin to pull away just after halfway. Good battles in the top ten
in the final stages of the event.
Lorne Browe would drop from the event on lap 15. Tanner would
challenge Speed for the top spot late in the race. The two would make contact
in the final turn with Speed holding on for the victory, Tanner would hang
on for second, Sanchez third, Hall fourth and Adam Haas fifth.
Chris Crews led the whole 15-lap IMCA modified event. Crews held off
the field through two caution periods. The biggest incident was on lap seven
for Karl Hackers crash on the backstretch. Paul LaRochelle held on for the
second spot and Bill Lander came home third.
The Eastern Limited Sprints were also on the card Saturday night and
ran a 20-lap feature. Rich Wood was the victor of the sprint car feature.
