BRIAN MCDONALD WINS AGAIN AT FROGTOWN
Brian McDonald of Cornwall, Ontario seems to be able to do no wrong at Frogtown as he brought home yet another victory in the 358 Modified feature this past Saturday night.
Bill Woodward and Chris Jones started on the front row of the Kanienkahaka Fuels 25 lap main event with Jones grabbing the early lead. Chris coming off an impressive half a track win in the qualifying heat picked up where he left off and opened up a sizeable lead only to have it go all wrong when his engine let go on lap #7.
On the restart in lap #8 Woodward grabbed the lead now followed closely by Mike Perrotte, Brian McDonald, Mark Hitchcock and Dave Heaslip. The veteran driver Woodward had his hands full holding off the perennial title contenders as Perrotte and McDonald gave Woodward all he could handle but the long time Frogtown and north country favorite held his ground and was determined to win his first 358 Modified feature in a long time. In lap #22 McDonald made his move and was able to get by Perrotte and grab second. With one more lap remaining, the crowd was on their feet as the two raced side by side down the front stretch and into turns 1 and 2. McDonald got a great bite on the tacky fast Frogtown surface and got by Woodward to take the win. A disappointed Bill Woodward settled for second with Mike Perrotte, Mark Hitchcock and Dave Heaslip rounded out the top five.
With one week remaining in the bid for the track title, it comes down to the top three, Mark Hitchcock (554 points), Brian McDonald (546 points) and Mike Perrotte (543 points), with having the best shot at the championship.
In the DIRT Pro Stock division it was Louie Jackson coming home with the victory. Melvin Rush and John Lazore started on the front row with Lazore grabbing the early lead at the drop of the green only to have Jackson come storming up from his 6th starting spot to take the lead in lap #3. Dave Bissonnette in the Quality Concrete #10 made his bid for the lead only to have mechanical problems send him to the pits on lap #17. P.J. Peters who has made his presence known of late moved into second but Jackson was just to much and held on for the win. P.J. Peters settled for second with Scott Kocher, Mitchell Jock and John Lazore rounding out the top five.
In the Semi Pro division, 20 cars took the green flag with Tom Chubb grabbing the lead followed by Mike Allen, Mike McDonald, Chris Rabideau and Steven Brand. Chubb held the lead until lap #5 when Allen was able to get by. The two battled furiously for the top spot until lap #11 when Chubb found an opening and took the lead for good. Mike Allen finished a very impressive second with Jeff Marshall, Pete Backus and Steven Brand rounding out the top five.
The Bandit feature was marred by a horrendous looking accident in turn #4 on the second lap of the event when popular Kevin Fetterly, Jr. flipped his car barrel rolling no less than eight times. It had to be one of the worst and most violent rolls in track history but after a short period of time, that seemed like ages to everyone, Fetterly emerged from the car shaken and walked to the ambulance under his own power. It was later know that he had decided to take a trip to a nearby hospital to be checked out. At press time his condition was not know.
When the race resumed Billy Woodward, Jr. and Kevin Mere battled for the #1 spot with the young Woodward taking another win at Frogtown. Kevin Mere finished second with Ron Sharlow, Danielle Legault and Steve Jeffery rounding out the top five.
In the Enduro class Ernie Cree made it four straight and his fifth win of the season as he pulled away from the rest of the field to win the event. Rock Niles finished second with Kevin Clement, Al Jacobs and Dion Oakes rounding out the top five.
Next week will be the final points race for all classes with the main event of the evening being the 2nd running of the Wolfclan Truck Stop Frogtown International Speedway Race of Champions 50 lap Syracuse Qualifier for the 358 Modifieds. A regular card of racing is set for the Pro Stocks, Semi Pros, Bandits and Enduro cars as well. Grandstand gates open at 6:00 p.m. with the first race scheduled to go away at 7:00 p.m. sharp.
