JOEL DOIRON BESTS MEMORIAL CUP FIELD AT FROGTOWN SPEEDWAY
Hogansburg, NY - Alexandria, Ontario's Joel Doiron added his name to the Memorial Cup on Saturday night, June 2nd, with one of the most convincing wins ever in the event. Doiron started on the front row of the 50 lap 358 Modified Syracuse Qualifier with Cornwall, Ontario's Brian McDonald along side.
Doiron grabbed the lead right from the drop of the green flag with McDonald close behind. Mechanical problems forced McDonald to the pits early which put Mike Perrotte in the #2 position. Back in the pack, Dave Heaslip and Delbert LeGrow were mounting a tremendous run to the front along with Leon Gonyo. Jim Ryan of Shoreham, Vermont stayed in the #3 spot but was unable to gain any ground on the speedy Perrotte and Doiron.
On lap 28, Heaslip, a past Memorial Cup Champion, dropped out after getting all the way to 4th. A tremendous battle ensued between LeGrow, Todd Stewart and Leon Gonyo.
Back in front, Doiron continued to survive numerous restarts and build up good leads on Perrotte after each restart. This paid off as Doiron went on for the win. Mike Perrotte finished second, with Delbert LeGrow, Jim Ryan and Leon Gonyo rounding out the top five.
In the Pro Stock division, Scott Kocher was able to grab a long awaited feature win at Frogtown Internation Speedway. Kocher took the lead right from the drop of the green with Louie Jackson close behind. Billy "the Kid" King took over second from Jackson on lap 6 and began to work on Kocher only to drop out on lap 12 with problems.
Floyd Thomas had mounted a drive from his 4th starting position and began to go to work on Scott throughout the rest of the race, but the stubborn Kocher was too close to his first feature win and fought off a determined Floyd Thomas for the win. Louie Jackson, Jody Swamp and Bruce Merpaw rounded out the top five.
In the Semi Pro Division, Jeff Marshall took his first feature win in the division. Greg Snyder who started 5th gave Marshall all he could handle but Jeff held on for the win. Pete Backus, Steven Brand and Kevin Mayville rounded out the top five.
In the Bandit Division, Ron Tyo fought off repeated challenges from a determined Kevin Fetterly, Jr. to pick up his first win at Frogtown. Andy Gardner, Rosco Garreau and Craig Reyelle rounded out the top five.
In the popular Enduro class, Ronnie Thompson fended off Owen White to take home the win.
A special thanks goes out to three great sponsors Frenchie's Chevrolet Olds, The Bears Den Trading Post and JR Fuels.
