Tanner Sails To First Of Season At New Egypt
New Egypt, NJ (September 14) – Tim Tanner Jr. of Ivyland, PA, finally found the combination to unlock victory lane, and sailed in for his first Modified win of the season at New Egypt Speedway on IMI Night on Saturday.
“I can’t believe it – it’s like a dream! It’s been two or three years since I won here,” Tanner, 27, said after cementing his third career win at the central Jersey track. “My mom, my dad, my girlfriend Jody – I wish they were all here tonight. I couldn’t have done this without them. And I can’t do this at all if it weren’t for my grandparents, Jake and D.A., who’ve been together for 50 years. I’ve been waiting a long time for this. . .and so have they.”
Scott VanGorder and Bob Worthington swapped the lead in the first half of the Modified 30, before Kenny Brightbill stole the point on lap 15, with the torrid Tanner in tow. Brightbill held tight to the low line, with Tanner in cruise mode up top, until the youngster dug in his heels coming off turn 4 on lap 21 and opened up for the lead. While veterans Brightbill, Frank Cozze, Billy Pauch and Keith Hoffman battled furiously behind him, Tanner had it all his way. At the stripe it was Tanner easy – the 14th different winner in the Modified division this season -- over Brightbill, current points leader Pauch, Cozze and Hoffman.
Cranbury, NJ’s Mike Lyons finally cracked the winner’s circle in the Sportsman class, to ink his first career win ever at New Egypt. Rookie Ken Meisner, Pete Telesco, Chuck Flesch and Lyons’ teammate Gene Stravinsky followed Lyons’ command performance. Rich Scagliotta, who finished seventh, took over the points lead.
The Waterford Warrior, Bill Gerber, claimed his third of the year in the 15-lap Super Stock fray, a race that was marred by a slew of yellow and red flags. Pat Conaway bested Gary Butler by a hair in a near photo-finish for second. Rich Page and Al Cheney completed the top five. A 10th-place finish kept Ralph Gargiulo atop the Super Stock point standings.
The Herman’s Trucking Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature event were won by Tim Tanner (Mods, 18.558), Mike Lyons (Sportsman, 19.402) and Bill Gerber (Super Stock, 20.504).
A full field of 132 race cars competed in 18 events during the evening. IMI awarded trophies to all winners, while Dirt Wheels Race Cars awarded gift certificates to the top three in the Modified and Sportsman ranks, and tossed a bunch of custom-designed T-shirts into the grandstands.
Next Saturday night, September 21, it’s big-block Mods, Sportsman and Super Stocks on the New Egypt card, sponsored by AMSOIL, while Mid-State Communications of Trenton presents the Modified Future Winners event for Mod drivers who have never won a feature race at New Egypt. Gates open at 3:30 pm, with first race at 5:30. Adult admission is $15, children 7-12 are $5, and kids 6 and under are free. For more information, call the track office at (609) 758-1900.
