RINE BECOMES 13th DIFFERENT LATE MODEL WINNER; HEADING TO HAGERSTOWN

September 14, 2002

CLEARFIELD, PA - Jeff Rine of Danville had the winning hand at Gamblers Raceway Park Saturday night as he won the Budweiser Late Model feature and earned the right to go to Hagerstown for the Hub-City 150 on Graham Motors Trophy night. Trent Ogden of Clearfield won his first 84 Lumber Street Stock feature in several years.

Repeat winners included Mike Stine of Smithmill in the Sids Subs Small Block Modifieds and Sheddy Graham III of Clearfield in the Fred Diehl of Philipsburg Pure Stocks. Larry Schultz of Hyde won the street stock mechanics race.

Like a shot out of a cannon, Steve Everhart took the lead at the start of the late model feature. As he was opening up a sizable lead, Jim Yoder and Greg Kunes were side-by-side for second. Mike Blose moved into battle for second on lap eight. Blose moved along side of Yoder, who ran door-to-door and closed in on Everhart. The top three were fighting for the lead, when Jeff Rine moved into the picture, making a four car fight for the top spot.

As the race continued, Blose moved into second, and on lap 13 he moved to the inside of Everhart. The duo was door-to-door again on the backstretch as Yoder sat in third and watched the event unfold ahead of him. Yoder brought out the caution on lap 22 when he drifted to a halt in turn two. One the restart, Blose was relegated to fourth, for hitting a barrel. The race restarted with Everhart in the lead, and Rine in second. Everhart nearly spun on lap 24, giving the lead to Rine. He continued to lead with Blose working his way back to second, until lap final caution flew on lap 31 for a heavy shower. The drivers pulled to the infield and requested the checkered be flown to call the race where it was with only four laps to go. The top five were: Rine, Blose, Kunes, Bobby Stokes and George Fultz. Heat wins went to Everhart and Kunes.

Mark Frankhouser and Mike Stine ran door-to-door for the first lap of the modified feature, with Frankhouser leading the first lap by only inches over Stine. Frankhouser led the main with Stine trying the low side several times. On lap 8, Stine again went to the low side of Frankhouser and took the lead off turn four. Once out front, Stine began to pull away. As the race continued, Fay Lumadue began to work the low side of Frankhouser, and eventually took the runner-up spot, as Stine went on to win his fourth feature of the season. Lumadue held on for second, with Jimmy Holden coming from tenth to third, Frankhouser was fourth and Scott Smith came from 13th to fifth. Heat wins went o Stine and Frankhouser.

Duane Kirk led three quarters of the opening lap before Trent Ogden made an outside turn four move to lead the first lap. Ogden had to hold off Kirk and Daryl Whetstone, before Dan Smeal moved into the battle for the lead on lap seven. Smeal began to pressure Ogden for the lead, and on lap 16 he led by a few inches over Ogden, who battled back and regained the lead on lap 17. Ogden continued to lead and held Smeal off the final eight laps to get his first win in several years. Smeal was second, Kirk was third, John Weaver was fourth and Pat Carfley was fifth. The heats were won by Kirk, Whetstone and Rich Howell.

Kevin Cark and Levi Ardery led the pure stock feature to the start, with Clark taking the lead for the first three laps, before Sheddy Graham III found an opening and took the lead. Once out front, Graham had no trouble holding off Gary Little, who came from 13th to second. At the strip it was Graham taking his fifth win, followed by Little, Clark, Ardery and Rob Bailey. Heat wins went to Ardery and Clark.

Larry Schultz led the street stock mechanics race from flag-to-flag, holding off Jim Martell the entire distance. As Joe Castagnolo waved the double checkered flags over the field, the top five were: Schultz, Martell, Jim Bloom, John Emigh Sr. and Rusty Hodgson.

GRP FINAL DEALS: 60 teams filled the pits, including: 14 late models, 13 small block modifieds, 19 street stocks and 14 pure stocks…This ends the 2002 season at the speedway, with plans for next year being made. The 2002 awards banquet will be held on Feb. 8 at the Clearfield Driving Park. Additional details will be released when they are finalized.
