Radd Surfs In For Big Hawaii Five-0 Win At New Egypt
New Egypt, NJ (August 17) - Twenty-six year-old Donny Radd of Ringoes, NJ,
became the flyin' Hawaiian Saturday at New Egypt Speedway, scoring a $3,500
victory in the track's big Hawaii Five-0 Modified 50, sponsored by Party
City of Brick.
"We've been struggling here the past month or so," said Radd, who'd failed
to crack the top five after winning his career-first on July 20. "We finally
got it all together."
Radd vaulted from his fourth starting spot into the lead on the first
go-round of the 50-lapper and ran his car on rails for the entire distance.
With division titans Billy Pauch, Kenny Brightbill and Keith Hoffman hot on
his heels, weaving in and around lapped traffic, Radd stayed glued to his
line. Pauch's best shot was blocked by a slower car in the final 10, and
Radd held off the two-time champ's hungry bid for his second score of the
year. Pauch, Hoffman, Brightbill and Laureno completed the unofficial top
five. Results of a top-three teardown will not be final until later in the
week; payoff for those positions will be held until the finish is deemed
official.
It was Number Two on the year for Belle Mead, NJ's Matt Papiez in the
Sportsman 20. Papiez held off an eleventh hour charge by G.R. Smith for the
victory. With a second-place finish, Smith now leads the division points
chase by five points. Early leader Larry Lippincott, Brad Brightbill and
Tommy Beamer completed the top five.
Super Mario strikes again! Rebounding mightily from a lap 1 spinout, Mario
Page of Somerset, NJ, muscled to the front to take his seventh feature win
of the season in the Super Stock class. Defending champ Al Cheney III
trailed Page at the stripe, with Pat Conaway third, Gary Butler fourth and
Jake Roveda fifth.
The Herman's Trucking Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature
event were won by Donny Radd (Mods, 18.790), Larry Lippincott (Sportsman,
20.367) and Mario Page (Super Stock, 20.546).
The Hawaii Five-0 theme night was celebrated with a boatload of giveaways
from Party City of Brick, the night's sponsor. In addition, Maxwell's
Special Event Catering threw a grand luau and fans were treated to the dance
routines of a professional Polynesian revue, courtesy of Gareis Property
Maintenance of Bordentown. Kids and adults also competed for prizes in a
series of hula contests.
This Thursday night is a big one at New Egypt, with NASCAR Winston Cup stars
Tony Stewart and Dave Blaney competing against the division regulars in
CARQUEST Auto Parts' "Down & Dirty!" 100 for Modifieds. Gates open at 3:30
pm, with time trials at 7:15. Tickets are $24 and will be available at the
speedway box office the day of the show. For more information, call the
track office at (609) 758-1900.
