Godown and Pursell Are New Egypt’s Saturday Stars
New Egypt, NJ (August 10) – Division rookie Ryan Godown of Ringoes, NJ,
scored a convincing second of the season in the Modified ranks, while Scott
Pursell of nearby Frenchtown, NJ, aced the URC Sprint race on Opdyke Lumber
Night Saturday at New Egypt Speedway.
“This is unbelievable,” said Godown, 27. “We blew our motor here last week –
and we really ain’t got the budget to do that. We were very upset after last
week – didn’t know what we were going to do. And then (Steve) Moss offered
to lend us his motor. We’re really, really thankful to him. If it wasn’t for
Moss, I wouldn’t be standing here tonight.”
In the 25-lap Modified main, Godown swept around the early leaders to grab
the point on lap 9, then settled into a low groove more to his liking.
Meanwhile, Roger Laureno, a feature winner on June 29, was riding the
cushion like a cowboy in a roundup, showing third on lap 18, taking second
the next tour. Laureno rode the high line, almost even with Godown down low,
while the fans took to their feet for an anything-goes finish. Godown had
just enough steam to kick it hard off the bottom out of turn four and claim
his second of the year over Laureno, Tom Hager, Darren McCaughey and Eddie
Bohn. Billy Pauch, who finished eighth, retook the hotly contested point
lead.
In a wheel-to-wheel 25-lap thriller, Scott Pursell grabbed the money spot
from Glen Clarke in dramatic fashion with two laps remaining to score his
first of the season, the second of his career, in the companion URC Sprint
race. Midge Miller finished second, with Chris Coyle third, Curt Michael
fourth and Gary Gollub in fifth.
“I want to dedicate this win to my mother-in-law, who passed away a year
ago. She was a big part of our race team and she is missed,” said Pursell,
adding, “This track is great. I just love this place.”
Hillsborough, NJ’s Jeff Geiges became the 13th different winner this year in
the Sportsman ranks, holding off a spirited bid by Larry Kline for his
first-ever victory. Rookie Anthony Tramontana, Joe Szwed and Joe Papiez
chased Geiges and Kline across the stripe in the division’s 15-lapper.
After weeks of coming close with no cigar, Jon Hewitt, Pipersville, PA, won
his career-first in the 15-lap Super Stock feature. Not to be denied this
time, Hewitt nixed a white-flag charge by defending division champ Al Cheney
III for the victory. Cheney, Rich Page, George Quinlan and Gary Butler
followed Hewitt to the line.
The Herman’s Trucking Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature
event were won by Darren McCaughey (Mods, 20.061), Jeff Geiges (Sportsman,
20.911) and Al Cheney III (Super Stock, 22.021).
More than 140 cars competed in 20 events during the night, which were
completed before 10:30 pm.
Sponsor Opdyke Lumber awarded trophies to all the winners, and tossed a ton
of custom-designed T-shirts into the grandstands to the fans’ delight.
Next week, Party City presents Hawaii Five-0 at New Egypt Speedway, with a
big 50-lapper for the Modifieds highlighting the three division race card.
Gates open at 4 pm, with first race at 6. Adult admission is $18, children
7-12 are $6, and kids 6 and under are free. For more information, call the
speedway office at (609) 758-1900.
