Hoffman Wins Medal of Honor At New Egypt
New Egypt, NJ (May 25) - Defending Modified champion Keith Hoffman of
Whitehall, PA, shut down a last-ditch charge by rival Billy Pauch to win his
second race of the season Saturday at New Egypt Speedway on Medal of Honor
Night, sponsored by Mid-State Communications.
"This is a lot of fun," said Hoffman, who is fielding his own team in 2002.
"I don't even have a crew chief this year - just a bunch of good guys who
all work their tails off. I really had a good car tonight."
Hoffman showed his strength early on, romping to a win in his heat, and
slashing through traffic in the 30-lap main event to move from 15th to the
lead in the first six laps. It looked like a Saturday night cruise for
Hoffman until Pauch made his presence known, hugging the high side to gain a
run off the cushion. With three to go, Pauch put the hammer down and pulled
even with Hoffman in lapped traffic. But Hoffman caught his breath when the
caution flew with two laps remaining. Pauch didn't get a second chance: It
was all Hoffman at the line, with Pauch second, division rookie Ryan Godown
in third, Frank Cozze fourth and Roger Laureno fifth.
Mike Toth of Pipersville, PA, grabbed the point on lap 4, held off a
three-to-go challenge by Mike Lyons, and went on to score his first of the
year in the Sportsman 20-lapper. Lyons, Brian Pearson, Mike Reutter Jr. and
Jack Swain completed the top five.
It was a dramatic win for Gary Butler, Phillipsburg, NJ, in the Super Stock
fray. Butler's last-lap, last-turn pass for the victory nixed Jon Hewitt's
solid bid at a career-first win. Ralph Gargiulo, Pat Conaway and Carol
Whitehouse followed Butler and Hewitt to the stripe.
In the final event of the Mid-State Communications' Rookie Sportsman series,
Fred Monk of Bordentown, NJ, won the battle but Wrightstown, PA's Billy
Tanner IV won the war. Monk scored his first series win over Tom
Fitzsimmons, Tanner, Randy Thomas and Glenn Hisko. Tanner's third-place
finish netted him the 2002 Rookie championship, worth $500 courtesy of
Mid-State Communications. Prior to the race, the Rookie Class of 2002
received their diplomas from Mid-State's Jim Potts, in formal graduation
ceremonies.
The Herman's Trucking Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature
event were won by Hoffman (Mods, 18.450), Toth (Sportsman, 19.655) and
Butler (Super Stock, 20.944).
As part of the track's Memorial Day tribute, Disabled American Veterans
Chapter #27 raised the colors, and collected money for veterans' causes
across the state. In addition, Mid-State Communications awarded medals of
honor to all race winners.
Next week, it's Scout Night at New Egypt Speedway, sponsored by Dick
Greenfield Dodge. All scouts in uniform, ages 7-12, will be admitted free.
Big-block Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stocks and the new SS Sprints are on
the four-division card. Gates open at 3:30 pm, with first race at 5:30.
Adult admission is $14, children 7-12 are $4, and kids 6 and under are free.
