Pauch Hauls To Third Of Year At New Egypt

New Egypt, NJ (June 1) - Two-time track champ Billy Pauch of Frenchtown, NJ,

used lapped traffic and the high line to his advantage, shutting down a

determined Darren McCaughey to win his third of the season Saturday on Dick

Greenfield Scout Night at New Egypt Speedway.

"My crew chief, big Artie (Van Solkema), went home with a stomach flu early

tonight, but the guys all pitched in to make sure everything was covered,"

Pauch revealed in victory lane. "I had a really good car tonight. When I

looked down and saw Darren, I knew once I got my momentum up I'd be okay."

After settling for second last week, Pauch wouldn't be denied this night,

hauling from 16th into second by lap 7. Pauch settled in for an easy stretch

until McCaughey decided to make things interesting. Gaining strength as the

race progressed, McCaughey had his small-block twisting; at the halfway

mark, he had the leader in his sights and signaled Pauch he meant business.

While McCaughey rode alongside in the low lane, Pauch was forced to drive

the wheels off his car up high. The pair crossed the stripe almost

dead-even, lap after lap, until Pauch was finally able to shake McCaughey in

lapped traffic. At the checkers, it was Pauch for his third of the year over

McCaughey, Kenny Brightbill, Keith Hoffman and Frank Cozze.

In one of the most thrilling Sportsman races to date, G.R. Smith of Folsom,

NJ, switched grooves at the end to outfox a ferocious Stan Ploski III and

win his career-first at the track. Ploski's high and handsome run got him

second, with Jim Scherer a solid third, Matt Papiez fourth, and Keith Foster

fifth.

The Page brothers added another page to their resumes, finishing one-two in

the 15-lap Super Stock event. Somerset, NJ's Mario Page bested brother Rich

for his second score of 2002. Al Cheney III, Kory Fleming and Ralph Gargiulo

followed the siblings to the stripe.

In the initial exhibition race of the new SS Sprint division, Jeff Schildt

of Palmyra, PA, topped Denny Willey of Carlisle in a 10-lap match.

The Herman's Trucking Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature

event were won by Billy Pauch (Mods, 18.978), Stan Ploski III (Sportsman,

19.462) and Al Cheney III (Super Stock, 21.586).

All scouts in uniform were admitted free for the track's annual Scout Night

celebration, and sponsor Dick Greenfield Dodge-Isuzu, Lawrenceville, NJ,

tossed hundreds of T-shirts into the grandstands. A helmet pass to benefit

Sportsman driver Rick Beavers, who suffered a heart attack at the speedway

the previous week, brought in $1,791.

Next week, it's Be-Bop Night at New Egypt Speedway, sponsored by Gem

Marketing. Big-block Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stocks, the new SS Sprints

and nostalgia stocks from the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club are on the

card for the rock 'n roll theme night. Gates open at 3:30 pm, with first

race at 5:45. Adult admission is $14, children 7-12 are $4, and kids 6 and

under are free. For more information, call the speedway office at (609)

758-1900.
