Pauch Back On Top In New Egypt Week Two

New Egypt, NJ (April 13) - After faltering in last week's opener,

Frenchtown, NJ's Billy Pauch rebounded with a vengeance this week, sweeping

both his heat and the $2,500 Modified feature win on Flowers by Addalia

Night at New Egypt Speedway.

"We were just a little too tight on the cushion," said Pauch, admitting he

wasn't altogether confident until he took the checker. "I didn't know how

far back Keith (Hoffman) was in that lapped traffic, so I just kept on

driving as hard as I could."

Drawing the pole for the start, Fred Dmuchowski led the initial five rounds,

with Pauch besting Keith Hoffman in a quick run to the front. Pauch took the

point, high and wide, on lap 6, pulling Hoffman in tow. Hoffman's last shot

came with a two-to-go caution, which bunched the field and sent the lapped

cars to the rear. But it was all Pauch in the final, recording his 42nd

career win at New Egypt and his first of 2002. Hoffman settled for second,

with Darren MCaughey's small-block in third, Bob Drayton in fourth and Frank

Cozze fifth.

Brian Godown, also of Frenchtown, had it all his way in the Sportsman

20-lapper, besting a valiant run by Mike Lyons to score his fifth career

victory. Lyons, G.R. Smith, Chuck Flesch and Matt Papiez followed Godown to

the stripe.

Racer Ralph Gargiulo of Brick, NJ, is hot, hot, hot, winning his second in

as many weeks in the Super Stock class. Gary Butler, Pat Conaway, Jon Hewitt

and Kory Fleming completed the top five.

Second generation driver Dave Woolston Jr., Florence, NJ, held off the last

ditch effort of Keith Plumstead to become the winner of the second race in

the Mid-State Communications Rookie Series. Plumstead, Rick Yard, Fred Monk

and Bill Tanner IV followed Woolston to the line.

The Herman's Trucking Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature

event were won by Pauch (Mods, 17.861), Mike Toth (Sportsman, 18.744) and

Gargiulo (Super Stock, 20.491). Earlier in the night, Rick Grosso Jr. broke

the existing Modified track record with a run of 17.318.

A fund drive to benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Ocean County raised $500

for the children's mentoring group.

Next week, it's AMSOIL Night at New Egypt Speedway, with big-block Modifieds

leading a bill of Sportsman, Super Stocks and Rookies. Gates open at 2:30

p.m. with first green at 5:30 p.m. Adult admission is $14, children 7-12 are

$4, and kids 6 and under are free. For more information, call the speedway

office at (609) 758-1900.
