PAINE LOOKING FOR 5TH TITLE,TAKES MOD WIN AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE, NY .... Steve Paine , out of Geneva,N.Y. is the undisputed "King of The Rock". He's won four straight 358 Modified track crowns at Black Rock, and served notice last Friday night that he's looking for five in a row.
In Super-Stock racing , Dale Welty, out of Spencer, N.Y., dominated the field in the familiar, pink and black, number 1-2-3. Tommy Austin took the victory in the Regional Pro-Trucks, while Joe Povoski, and Scott Yaw were winners in the 4 Cyl. Stock division. Jon Wallenbeck won the 10 lap Black Rock Bandit main event.
The 25 lap Modified feature saw the field on the line in a heads up start that put Charlie Donk and Steve Paine in the front row. Donk was the early leader with Pain in his shadow. These two veterans ran wheel to wheel as they began to pull away from the rest of the field. They were into lapped traffic as early as lap four. Lap eight saw Paine get past Donk for the lead in turn four. Paine began to pull away as Donk was having trouble with lapped cars. Lap 13 saw the yellow lights flashing as Donk tangled with the back markers, and the front end on the #99 was severely damaged. He was done for the night. As the race resumed, Paine continued to dominate the remainder of the event. Bryon Turner gave chase to the leader, but Paine was able to cruise home with victory. Turner held on for second, third after a great drive was Gil Tegg, fourth was Stacey Jackson, and Alex Hoag filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Charlie Donk, Steve Paine, and Stacey Jackson. The Modified B-Main was won by Ronnie White.
The PPG Super-Stock feature also saw a heads up start for the main event, and that put Dale Welty, and Dave Fultz on the front row. AS in the Modified feature, the front row took off from the rest of the field, with Welty leading Fultz. Dave Duboise running third. The caution flags waved on lap four for Josh Ripley in turn four. On the re-start, Dave Fultz started to drop off the pace with a flat right front tire. He was able to go to the pits and get it changed before going down a lap. He was aided in this effort by a tangle between Eddie Mills, and John Sutryk in turn three. As the race resumed, Welty and his famous 1-2-3 ran away from the rest of the field. By lap 14 Dave Fultz had charged all the way back to the third position. At the checkers it was Dale Welty coming home victorious. Rob Conklin had a great run to finish second, Fultz got third, fourth was Fred Buckley, and Carl Cleveland filled out the top five. Heats were taken by Fultz and Welty.
Tommy Austin had trouble finishing races in the Regional Pro-Truck division last year. That's all behind him now, after a dominating drive in the feature that saw the 88A perform flawlessly for the 20 lap distance. Austin pulled away from the field, but there was a spirited battle for second between Eddie Machuga and Don Divens. Austin held on to take the win, and Divens beat Machuga to the line for second. Forth was Fred Buckley, and filling out the top five after a great drive from the back of the field was Steve Brace. Heats were won by, Austin and Machuga.
In the first of two 4 Cyl. Stock features, the Povoski brothers were at the top of the field and racing each other for the win. Defending track champion drove Steven Ovens' car to the win over brother Terry. Third was Jason White, fourth Kenny Hunt, and fifth was Jared Hill.
In the second feature, Scott Yaw jumped out to the early lead with Karl Weichenthal right on his back bumper. Eventually, Weichenthal went to the pits with a flat tire. Yaw then began to pull away, but there was a good race going on for second between Donnie Smith and Alfy Clark. When the checkers flew, it was Scott Yaw in for the win with Donnie Smith second. Alfy Clark was third, followed by Mike Hughey and Jake Clancey. Heats were won by, Joe Povoski, Terry Povoski, Scott Yaw, and Karl Weichenthal.
Jon Wallenbeck finished second in the point title last year in the Black Rock Bandits. It was a close race with long time rival Steven Ovens. This year may be different. That is if last weeks performance was any indication. Wallenbeck took the lead in turn two using a lapped car as a pick. Once out in front, he was able to pull away from the field. Ovens had trouble early with a spin in turn one, and then he was hit by Laverne Knickerbocker III, and that ripped off the rear bumper cover. Ovens finished 10th. Wallenbeck took the popular win, Brady Fultz was second after a great drive, third was Ray Speicher, fourth was Trevor Sutherland, and Laverne Knickerbocker III was fifth.
