PAINE WINS TWICE AT BLACK ROCK IN SAME WEEK

DUNDEE, NY……….Steve Paine is the "King of the Rock". Black Rock Speedway, that is. Fresh off his big win in the Turning Stone Casino 358 Super Dirt Series event on Tuesday, August 20th, he turned around and won the regular Friday night 358 Modified feature three days later. Dave Fultz came another step closer to the championship in the PPG Super-Stocks, by picking up another win in the division. The Regional Pro-Truck championship will come down to the final race of the season, as Eddie Machuga picked up the win, and Steve Brace had problems. In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Karl Weichenthal, and Tim Povoski were the winners, thing will be interesting in this championship as well. Laverne Knickerbocker III was the winner in the Bandits for the second time in a row driving the Gene DuPuy #70.

Steve Paine started 18th on the grid in the 358 Modified feature but it didn't take long before he was in the hunt for the lead in this 25 lap affair. Stacy Jackson took off for the early lead. Lap 5 saw the first yellow of the event as Dave Yehl and Alex Hoag got together in turn two. At this point, Paine was already in 10th position. One lap later, Jim Roberts got into Hoag in turn four. Lap 7 saw Paine in the 7th position. Stacy Jackson had extended his lead, while Ron White, Gil Tegg, Chuck Graham, and Mike Jackson filled out the top five. The half way mark saw Paine in the third spot, just behind Ron White and Stacy Jackson. On the next lap Paine had pushed the 7X into second and was pressuring Jackson for the lead. Lap 16 saw Paine sweep by Jackson for the lead, these two were followed by Ron White and Gil Tegg. Lap 22 had a yellow flag situation as the motor in the #18 of Donnie Lawson came unglued. As racing resumed, Paine was able to hold on for the win. Filling up the top five at the checkers were, Stacy Jackson, Ron White, Chuck Graham, Gil Tegg Jr. Heats were won by, Stacy Jackson, Brian Swarthout, Dave Yehl.

Dave Fultz didn't look that strong in his heat event, but come feature time it was a different story as he was the man to beat in the 20 lap PPG Super-Stock feature. Chris McCann jumped out to the early lead in this one, but his lead was to be a short one as he spun in front of the whole field coming out of turn four on lap three. McCann lost a wheel on the Multi-Media Services 4JM to trigger the multi car jam up that involved Dale Welty, Rich Karlnoski, Rob Conklin, and Bill Miller. McCann was done for the night, the rest were able to continue. On the re-start, Dave Fultz took off and ran away from the rest of the field. Dale Welty was the man on the move as he was in second by lap 12. Welty mounted a late race charge, but there was no catching the high flying Fultz on this night. Welty was second as the checkers flew, third was Quinn Sutherland, Alan Crooker was fourth, and Fred Buckley filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Chris McCann, and Alan Crooker.

The Regional Pro-Trucks have one point race remaining, and it will decide the track championship. After a whole season of racing, it has come down to Eddie Machuga and Steve Brace. On this night of high attrition, Steve Brace and Serenity Sutherland got together in the back stretch wall, and the #19 suffered heavy damage, and had to go to the pits. Eddie Machuga was the leader in the event and would go on for the win. But, as many of the trucks dropped out of this event, it was important that Brace try to get the #19 back on the track to pick up as many points as possible. He limped his damaged mount back on the speedway and finished 9th. So, there is only a handful of points separating Machuga and Brace for the track title. Filling out the top five at the finish were, Tommy Austin, Keith Austin, Brian Doolittle, and Bob Buono. Heats were won by Brian Doolittle, and Steve Brace.

In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Karl Weichenthal was the winner in the first of two features, Mike Hughey, Josh Mills, Scott Yaw, and Willy Grant Jr., filled out the top five. In the second feature, Tim Povoski pulled off the tight win over Skip Dean after several laps of side by side racing. Third was Donnie Smith, fourth went to Phil Yaw, and Eddie Crawford was fifth. Heats were won by, Josh Mills, Terry Povoski, Mark Hills, and Skip Dean.

Jamie Schuyler drove the race of her young career on this night in the Black Rock Bandits. She looked to be on her way to her first ever feature win, but Laverne Knickerbocker III took the lead with just two laps left to go. Schuyler came on strong at the line, but had to settle for second. Third was Josh Smith. Brady Fultz and Brad Ovens filled out the top five.

In 1 on 1 racing, Shawn Brace was the car division, and overall winner driving a 1986 Chevy Monte Carlo, the track winner was Richard Zee-are-no in a '93 GMC Sonoma.
