'THE HURRICANE' ACES TURNING STONE CASINO 358 MODIFIED RACE AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE, NY……..For the second year in a row, Steve Paine was the big winner in the Turning Stone Casino, 358 Super Dirt Series race at the Black Rock Speedway. Fred Buckley took the win in the Regional Pro-Trucks. In 4 Cyl. Stock racing action, Chuck Leasure, and Tim Povoski were winners. Laverne Knickerbocker III took the Black Rock Bandit win in the Gene DuPuy #70.
Over 40 of the best 358 teams rolled into the Black Rock Speedway for the Turning Stone Casino 358 Modified Super Dirt Series event. At the end of the night they all found out why you could call this track the "House of Paine." Paine time trialed third fastest with a time of 16.190 for a speed of 85.608 MPH. After the re-draw, he would start 11th on the grid. Quick time of the night was set by Brett Hearn in the Brioschi-Madsen Overhead Doors #20. He was the only driver to crack the 16 second mark with a 15.986, for a speed of 86.701 MPH. After the re-draw, he would start next to Paine in 12th. Gil Tegg drew the pole position, and he would lead the field to green in the Willy Decker, Westmoreland Golf Club 1X. Danny Johnson was on the outside pole in the J. Baum Truck Parts Orange Energy 27J. Tegg and D.J. battled for the early lead, with Alan Johnson and Chuck Graham in tow. Danny pulled out an advantage over Tegg and began to pull away. Paine and Hearn were on the move as they were racing for 9th on lap 10. The first yellow of the event came on lap 11 for a flat tire on the Pete Bicknell 42. He would return for a top ten finish. On the re-start, Danny was still the leader, but now Matt Sheppard had moved up to second in the Nick's Café 28S. The next yellow flew three laps later, as Byron Turner and Tim Sebring got together just out of turn two. On the re-start, Paine had worked himself up to second, and on lap 18 he took the lead coming out of turn four. The Sweetners Plus 7X would remain out in front for the remainder of the event. Lap 19 saw Brett Hearn take his mount to the pits, he would not return. Paine began to pull away out in front of the field, while Matt Sheppard and Danny Johnson battled for 2nd and third. The yellow lights came on at lap 35 as Vic Coffey, Rich Swarthout , Billy VanPelt and Gill Tegg all got together in turn four. As the race resumed, Paine continued to lead, and pulled away to a full straight away advantage over Matt Sheppard, Danny Johnson, Alan Johnson, and Brian Swarthout. On lap 52 on the back straight, Danny Johnson, and Chuck Graham hooked crash bars, and slid to the infield. They would re-start at the tail of the field. On the next lap Vic Coffey and Dave DuBois got together and hit the inside wall in turns three and four. With the green flag back out, Paine continued to lead the field, Matt Sheppard was second, third was Alan Johnson, fourth was Pete Bicknell, and Alex Hoag filled up the top five. Paine held on to the top spot for the rest of the way surviving a lap 99 caution. Matt Sheppard was second, third was Alan Johnson, fourth went to Pete Bicknell, and Danny Johnson filled out the top five. Alex Hoag was sixth, and picked up the Syracuse spot. Heat winners were, Steve Paine, Alan Johnson, Chuck Graham, and Jason Barney. Bryon Turner, and Mike Jackson were consi winners.
The Regional Pro-Trucks saw action on this night, and Fred Buckley took the lead at the half way point, and pulled away from the field for a while, but later in the event Jeff Barner pulled right up on his tail gate and made for a close finish at the checkers. Buckley took the win, Jeff Barner was a close second, third was Tommy Austin, fourth was Steve Brace and Doug Buckley filled up the top five. Heats were won by, Don Divens and Doug Buckley.
In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Chuck Leasure took the early lead, and after a hard fought battle with Karl Weichenthal, was able to hold on for the win. Weichenthal took second, third was Jack Ayers, fourth was Scott Yaw, and Terry Povoski filled out the top five.
In the second of two 4 Cyl. Stock features, Tim Povoski pulled off the win over Mike Hughey, Phil Yaw, Jeremy Potrzebowski, and Les Irwin. Heats were won by, Jack Ayers, Scott Yaw and Tim Povoski.
In the Black Rock Bandits, Laverne Knickerbocker III took the win driving the Gene DuPuy #70 took the win, he was followed across the line by, Trevor Sutherland, Adam Austin, Jamie Schuyler, and Ray Speicher.
