BRYON TURNER BECOMES 6TH DIFFERENT MOD WINNER AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE, NY……. Bryon Turner, out of Victor, N.Y., became the sixth different winner in the 358 Modified division last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway. In the PPG Super-Stocks, Dave Fultz, out of Dundee, picked up his third win in a row, as he continues his march to a second consecutive track championship. Eddie Machuga was the big winner in the Regional Pro-Trucks. In 4 Cyl Stock racing, Jack Ayers, and Phil Yaw were repeat winners, while Brady Fultz continued a family tradition by winning his first ever feature in the Black Rock Bandits.
After five years of competition in the 358 Modifieds at Black Rock, Bryon Turner finally picked up his second win. Up until last Friday night, it has been a frustrating season for the veteran driver of the J.G. Turner #11 Modified. This car is always immaculately prepared, and usually fast, all Turner needed was a little racing luck. He had a perfect night. He fought for the early lead with Bill Deming, and they went wheel to wheel for the first six laps, on the next circuit, Turner snatched the lead away from Deming, and never lost it the rest of the distance. At this point, Stacy Jackson was second, and Bill Deming had dropped to third. Steve Paine, and Charlie Donk were on the move, and were in sixth and seventh respectively by lap 9. Two laps later, Donk brushed the fourth turn outside wall and turned around, he then had to take his 99 to the pits. At the half way mark it was Turner in the lead, followed by Stacy Jackson, Bill Deming, Tim Sebring, and Steve Paine. The 7X had found some grip in the "Paine Lane" and was on the move. He found himself in second by lap 21, but, he couldn't catch the high flying Turner, and Bryon went in for the popular win. Paine finished second, third was Stacy Jackson, fourth went to Bill Deming, and rounding out the top five was, Alex Hoag. Heats were won by, Tim Sebring, Bill Deming, and Derrick Podsiadlo.
Dave Fultz kept his win streak alive, and extended it to three in a row in the PPG Super-Stocks. Once again there were problems early in this event, as Chris McCann spun in front of the whole field in turn three. Most of the field piled in, and this brought out the red flag. Larry Knowles and Quinn Sutherland's mounts were the most seriously damaged. As the race resumed, Bill Miller was the early leader, but on the second circuit Dave Fultz took over the top spot. As the laps clicked off, Dale Welty worked his way up to challenge Fultz. These two veteran drivers had a close finish at the checkers, but it was Dave Fultz taking his third win in a row, Welty had to settle for second, third was Alan Crooker, fourth went to Rich Karlnoski, and Eddie Mills filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Fultz and Welty.
In Regional Pro-Truck racing, pole sitter Ron Divens jumped out to the early lead, while Doug Buckley and Jeff Barner were racing for second and third. On lap 7 Serenity Sutherland spun the #37 in turn one, at the same time, Don Divens got spun around on the front straight, and hit the inside wall head on, this brought out the red flag. Divens was removed from the truck by EMT's, and transported to the local hospital. His condition was believed not to be serious. When the green flag came back out, the battle for the lead was between Ron Divens and Eddie Machuga. Lap 11 saw point leader, Steve Brace pull off the track on the back straight with both left side tires flat. Also at this time, Brian Metcalf spun and Tom Kessler got into him. Lap 13 saw Eddie Machuga take the lead away from Ron Divens, and this is the way they finished at the checkers. Third was Doug Buckley, fourth was Brian Doolittle, and Keith Austin rounded out the top five. Heat winners were, Ron Divens, and Jeff Barner.
In the first of two 4 Cyl. Stock features, Jack Ayres was the winner after taking the lead at the half way point in the event after battling with Scott Yaw. Yaw was able to finish second, third was Alfy Clark, fourth went to, Karl Weichenthal, and Willy Grant Jr. was fifth.
In the second feature, Phil Yaw was the winner once again in the Mark Wallenbeck #24X. Tim Povoski, Donnie Smith, Steven Ovens, and Mike Buchanan filled out the top five. Heat winners were, Mike Hughey, Josh Mills, Phil Yaw, and Del Cummings.
It was Fultz family night in victory lane last Friday night, as Brady Fultz took his first ever win in the Black Rock Bandits, and his dad, Dave took the win in the Super-Stocks! But, the younger Fultz's win almost didn't happen. Although he jumped out to an early lead, and quickly built up a huge lead early, point leader, Ray Speicher began to catch Fultz later in the event. Right at the checkered flag, Fultz put on the breaks to avoid a couple of lapped cars, and Speicher and Fultz finished in almost in a dead heat! Fultz took the win by inches over Speicher, Trevor Sutherland was third, Laverne Knickerbocker III fourth, and Justin Diven was fifth.
The Mid-State Antique Stock Cars were on hand and Gordie Wood, out of Weedsport, N.Y., driving a 1936 Plymouth took the win in the '50's class, Doc Smith was the winner in the '60's class driving the #17, 1937 Chevy, and Bob Williams, out of Woodhull, N.Y. was the '70's class winner in the #17, 1937 Chevy.
