STACY JACKSON STOPS THE "HURRICANE" AT BLACK ROCK

DUNDEE, NY…Stacy Jackson, out of Woodhull, N.Y., took the exciting win in the 358 Modified feature last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway. Dave Fultz grabbed his first win of the season in the PPG Super-Stocks, and Don Divens also stood in victory lane for the first time in the 2002 season in the Regional Pro-Trucks. In 4 Cyl. Stock racing action, Karl Weichenthal became a 2-time winner, and Jason White took his first win of the year. In the Black Rock Bandits, Ray Speicher won his second feature event in a row.

On an unseasonably cold night on the first Friday in May, history was made in the 358 Modified division. In one of the most exciting races seen at Black Rock in many seasons, Steve Paine was beaten on the racetrack for the first time in 5 years! This is a major accomplishment for both drivers. For Paine for setting this astounding record, and for Jackson for breaking it. Fran Hilton, out of Phelps, N.Y., jumped out to the early lead in Ron White's team car, White himself, took over the lead on the second lap in turn three, and he began to pull away. By lap 4 Stacy Jackson was in the second position, up from his 12th starting spot. Lap 9 saw Steve Paine move into the 7th spot while Jackson took the lead in turn one. Paine was a man on a mission, and he was in 4th on lap 13, and on the next circuit he was second. This was to set the stage for the battle of the decade at "The Rock". A couple of caution flags put the 7X right on the rear crash rail of the Terry Brewer owned #15 of Jackson. The last yellow flew on lap 16, this left 9 laps for Jackson and Paine to decide who would stand in victory lane. When the last green flag was waved, Paine took off in hot pursuit of Jackson. These two veterans ran wheel to wheel for the remaining laps. Several times Paine had the nose of the 7X under Jackson but couldn't make the pass. This race had the entire grandstand on its feet cheering for the "underdog" as he held off the 4-time track champion. Everyone was wondering when Paine would make the pass and take the win like he's done so many times in the past. In turn two on the final lap, Paine was in position to pass Jackson on the inside. Jackson closed off the line. Paine could have gotten by Jackson at that point, but if he had stayed in the throttle, he would have spun Jackson out. Paine let off the gas, and the two ran side by side the rest of the lap with Jackson taking the checkers ahead of Paine. Tim Sebring took third, fourth was Gil Tegg Jr., and Ron White filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Brian Swarthout, Stacy Jackson and Ron White. Rich Swarthout won the B-Main.

Defending track champion in the Super-Stocks, Dave Fultz, was the point leader coming on to this night of racing, but his #70 hadn't been really performing the way he wanted it to. That all changed as he took his first feature win in the 2002 season. He started in the 13th position, but moved up through the field quickly. He took the lead from Larry Knowles at the half waypoint, and went on to score the popular win. Dale Welty beat Larry Knowles to the line for second, fourth was Rich Karlnoski, and Dave DuBois rounded out the top five. Heats were won by, Rich Karlnoski, and Larry Knowles.

Don Divens also took his first win of the season in the Regional Pro-Truck division. On the opening lap, pole sitter, Serenity Sutherland spun her mount in turn three, Steve Brace, Francis Furch, and Steve Brace had no place to go, and all of these trucks made contact with each other. Doug Buckley and Jeff Barner raced for the early lead. Eddie Machuga was also in the mix for third. By lap 10 Don Divens had moved up to second and was chasing down Jeff Barner for the lead. Divens took the lead on the back straight on this lap, Machuga was still third. On the white flag lap, Machuga took over second, but, he couldn't catch the high flying Divens. At the flag it was Don Divens across the line first, Eddie Machuga was second, third was Jeff Barner, fourth went to, Ron Divens, and Doug Buckley rounded out the top five. Heats were won by, Don Divens and Eddie Machuga.

In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Karl Weichenthal picked up his second win of the season in the first of two features. Mike Hughey finished second, third was Ryan Davenport, fourth was Jack Ayers, and Tim Povoski was fifth.

In the second feature, Jason White took his first win of the season, Terry Povoski was second, third was Kevin Young, Frank Guererri Jr., was fourth, and Nathan Daggett rounded out the top five. Were won by, Ryan Davenport, Karl Weichenthal, Mike Hughey, Scott Yaw and Donnie Smith finished in a dead heat in the fourth qualifier.

In Black Rock Bandit racing, Ray Speicher took his second win in a row. Second was Jon Wallenbeck, third was Trevor Sutherland, fourth went to Steven Ovens, and Brady Fultz filled out the top five.

In 1 on 1 spectator racing, Shawn Brace was the car winner, and the overall winner. Roger Layton was the truck winner.
