STEVE PAINE, DALE WELTY, AND EDDIE MACHUGA VICTORIOUS AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE, NY…Steve Paine continues his winning ways in the 358 Modifieds at the Black Rock Speedway as he picked up another win last Friday night. Dale Welty was the winner of the 50 Lap PPG Super-Stock event and Eddie Machuga outlasted all competitors and won the Regional International Pro-Truck feature. In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Joe Povoski keeps on winning, as picked yet another victory in the first feature, and Kenny Hunt took the second 4 Cyl. Race. Nathan Daggett took his first ever win in the Black Rock Bandits feature on Knapp and Schlappi Lumber, Chilson Bros. Roofing/Two Rivers Timber night.
Steve Paine won the Modified feature last Friday night; there is nothing new about that. The fact that he had to qualify through the B-Main, however, was new. He struggled to get into a qualifying position in his heat race, and toward the end of that event he had a flat tire. He is a guaranteed starter in the feature event due to his place in the point standings. But, if he had not run the B-Main, he would have had to start behind the consi cars. He won the B-Main, and started 19th on the grid. Almost business as usual. Steve Mandell looked like he was shot out of a gun when the green flag came out, he jumped out to the early and pulled away from the field quickly. Todd Henderson was second, but it was distant. Filling out the top five in the early laps were Don Lawson, John Moravec and Alex Hoag. The first yellow flag flew on lap eight, when Butch Harris stopped outside turn two. Another caution came out on lap nine as Fran Hilton and Bill Demming got together in turn three. On the re-start, Todd Henderson took the lead and Alex Hoag was now second, Steve Mandell was back to third. Steve Paine was working his way up through the field and was 10th by lap 12. Henderson and Hoag were battling for the lead, and pulled away from the field. Lap 14 saw another yellow flag as Derrick Podsiadlo and Stacy Jackson go off turn one, and Curt VanPelt slid to the infield. Paine had moved to 6th by lap 15, and fourth by lap 18. Hoag and Henderson were still racing for the lead, and Hoag took the top spot on lap 20 in turn three, and Paine was now second after Todd Henderson went off turn two. Now the top five was, Alex Hoag, Steve Paine, third was Tim Sebring, and then it was Charlie Donk and John Moravec. This set up another battle between Hoag and Paine for the win. Paine got by Hoag in turn three on lap 22 and took the lead, and went on for the win. Hoag held on for second, third was Charlie Donk, Tim Sebring fourth, and John Moravec filled up the top five. Todd Henderson, Stacy Jackson, and Tim Sebring won heats.
35 Modifieds checked in for the night's racing action, so a B-Main was needed to slim the field down to the starting 24. Steve Paine took the win in this event, and Bill Demming, Chuck Kennison, Pat Jordan, Fran Hilton, and Ron White also transferred to the feature.
Dale Welty picked up the big 50-lap feature for the PPG Super-Stocks. Division Sponsor, Elmira-Ithaca Auto Paint PPG were on hand, and Chilson Bros. Roofing/ Two Rivers Timber were adding extra money to the purse. Chris Daugherty raced with Jim Schuyler for the early lead in this one, and then Dave DuBois took the lead on lap six. Once out in front DuBois began to pull away, Dave Fultz was now second. A caution on lap 13 closed up the field, and this set up a battle between DuBois and Fultz. Dale Welty was on the move by now and was third by lap 19. Welty then got by DuBois for second and set his sights on Fultz. Welty took over the top spot at the half waypoint, and he raced hard with Dave Fultz to keep the lead. Fultz dropped back to fifth by lap 43, and Welty went in for the big win. Second was Dave DuBois, Kevin Chilson was third, fourth was Alan Crooker, and Quinn Sutherland filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Eddie Mills, John Sutryk, and Larry Knowles. Welty was also the winner of the $150 in the Dash for Cash sponsored by Chilson Bros. Roofing, Two Rivers Timber.
Eddie Machuga got the win the Regional International Pro-Trucks; he took the lead on lap 9 and held off a hard charging Fred Buckley to the checkers. But, in the early going in this event, it looked like Tommy Austin was the hot driver. He took the lead early, and ran away from the rest of the field. But once again bad luck was to rear its ugly head as on lap 8 he made contact with Brian Metcalf coming out of the infield. His race was over, all too early once again. At the checkers it was Machuga in for the win, Fred Buckley was second, third was Doug Buckley, fourth went to Jeff Barner, and Steve Brace was fifth. Tommy Austin and Don Divens were heat winners.
In the NAPA 4 Cyl. Stocks, Joe Povoski continues his march to the championship as he took yet another win in the division. He won the first of two features for this class. Jack Ayres was second, third was Karl Weichenthal, Skip Dean was fourth and Scott Yaw filled out the top five. In the second feature, Kenny Hunt took his second win in as many weeks, second was Terry Povoski, third was Ray Hyer, fourth went to Scott Bradley, and Ryan Davenport was fifth. Heats were won by, A Jay Potrzebowski, Terry Povoski, Mike Hughey, and Joe Povoski.
Nathan Daggett took the first win of his career in the Black Rock Bandits. He took the lead in turn three on lap four, and went on for the win. Trevor Sutherland was a close second, third was Ray Speicher, Dustin Towner got fourth, and Frank Guererri was fifth.
